Former Nigeria International, Segun Odegbami has stated that Sunday Oliseh, who is reportedly in the frame to be the next Super Eagles Coach, is in possession of the intellectual skills to move Nigerian football to the “next level.”

Odegbami who made this claim in an interactive session “Sunrise Daily” on Channels, Thursday stated that Nigerian football lacked certain ingredients which deter it from rising to the level it’s supposed to be.

“Let me let me tell you, I mentioned the word ‘intellectual capacity,’ Sunday Oliseh who has just joined, do you know he is a graduate? He is a lawyer, he studied in LASU and for that alone he has the capacity to take our football beyond where we are, that’s the difference,” Odegbami stated.

The former Eagles forward cited Nollywood and the music industry as examples which had been transformed over the years because “a lot of intellectuals are coming into it, they have taken it beyond a certain level and that’s what Sunday Oliseh is bringing into Nigerian football.

The “Mathematician” as he is fondly called described Oliseh as a “Fantastic choice” adding that “After Stephen Keshi it is now the era of the intellectuals, the best.”

“Listen to his analysis, listen to his commentaries, read his write-ups, you will see that he has something all other Nigerian coaches didn’t have; ‘the utilization of the mind’,” He added.

Odegbami noted that Oliseh is not a magician who would turn things around overnight but insisted he could do the job because he has the right skills.

“Sunday Oliseh can go in there and fail from day one, I know that there is a prospect because football is a very complicated game people don’t know,” He said

Odegbami did however frown at the decision of the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, to have former coach, Amodu Shaibu and a technical team to supervise the activities of the coach.

“Now that they are getting Sunday Oliseh whose mandate is clearly to handle the National team, look around the country for the best players in Europe and so on and make sure you have to start planning for the matches he has to play, so that his success will be measured.

“In terms of whether he wins or loses games, it is limited now that you have created these conflict areas as Amodu Shaibu and Sunday Oliseh are bound to clash.

“Once you start having expectation beyond the National team winning, then you are putting Sunday Oliseh into deep trouble.

“Another thing I saw that I didn’t like is the aspect of foreign assistance for him (Oliseh).”

Keshi Comments

Meanwhile Odegbami revealed he felt Stephen Keshi stayed this long on the job as the head coach of the national team because he is a very nationalistic Nigerian who has great love for Nigeria.

“Keshi has always been proud to be a Nigerian, I know that because we’ve been together, he is very nationalistic. That is why he will always choose Nigeria first.” He said

According to him, if Keshi had performed well and won all his matches after the World Cup, the issue of applying for a job elsewhere wouldn’t have been an issue.

He said the issue of the job was an opportunity for the NFF to kick him out; “It was an accident waiting to happen, he just gave them the ammunition to deal with him and they dealt with him at the appropriate time.

“They were looking for him since the World Cup ended and he was been supported by the Presidency, not the President but somebody high up there. Everybody knew it was a matter of time and was bound to happen and suddenly this opportunity came and they pounced.”

can't the NFF replace shaibu with onigbinde? or does the former have something the other doesn't possess or maybe he has "oga at the top"?

Sitting down in front of your TV set and analysing football match is different from being on the HOTSEAT it self, good luck to him

He could very well be a " Nigerian mourinho." He has that maverick streak about him.
