A student of Computer Science, Federal Polytechnic Bida,
Umah Faruku Ajewole has developed an electronic based
voting website to be used in the forthcoming departmental
election of the institution.
Ajowole disclosed that the website www.acossfpb.com
<http://www.acossfpb.com> will allow the student of the
Computer Science Department cast their vote for the
candidate of their choice from any location they are through internet facility
He said students can cast their votes even in their living
rooms and monitor the voting process as well.
The developer said the website can be replicated for the
Student Union Government (SUG) election and by extension
other election in the country
Speaking of the advantage, he said the website will prevent
multiple registrations and voting, make the process credible by being free and fair and allows the electorate to see if their voting decision has being tampered with.
The department electoral officer, Samuel Alade said the use
of the website which is an electronic based system will
prevent errors which are common with manual registration
and the use of ballot paper.
He said the website will enable safety of the votes casted
and make the counting of votes to be done easily.
While calling on the management of the institutions to adopt the system for all elections in the school as it is user
friendly and cost effective, he pointed out that the students
might want to reject the introduction of the electronic
system due to their familiarity with their manual voting
system.

While this is a good idea, I don't see this being replicated in a wider context (e.g LG, State, FG Elections) due to its many defects.

1. Only those who have access to internet facility will be able to vote. What about those in rural arears?

2. Only those who are computer literate will partake in such election obviously disenfranchising millions of others.

3. Once the website is compromised during, before or after voting, then the whole exercise would have been a waste.

4. The system can even be manipulated to favour a particular party or candidate. You have heard how simple polls have been manipulated in Nigeria.

5. Infrastructure to support the use of website for voting are just not available in sufficient quantity in Nigeria.

The list can go on and on but in summary, this system cannot be replicated in a wider context.
