Lagos radical lawyer, Festus Keyamo, has again failed to clinch the rank of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) for the second time as his name was missing in the list of 21 lawyers conferred with the rank by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) on Friday June 10.

Lawyers that made the list are Dr. Muiz Banire, Dr. Muiz Banire, Dr. Oladapo Olanipekun, Emeka Etiaba, Ibrahim Bawa; Edward Ashiekaa, Benson Nwankwo, Joseph Bamigboye. Others are Patrick Okolo, Prof. Maxwell Gidado, Dr. Tahir Mamman, and Dr. Akinpelu Onigbinde.

Also getting the coveted rank of SAN are: Samuel Zibiri, Adeniyi Adegbonmire, Aderibigbe Adedeji, Emmanuel Aguma, Abimbola Akeredolu, Olumuyiwa Akinboro, Gordy Uche, Uchechukwu Obi, Kehinde Eleja and Prof. Paul Idornigie.

Gidado, Mamman, and Idornigie were of the academic category while the rest of the 18 others are practicing lawyers.

A close look at list of the successful new SAN recipients shown that only one woman made it out of the three females that applied for it. Further breakdown shown that 124 applicants, including Keyamo, applied for the rank but only 21 applicants were successful.

Announcing the names of the successful applicants, the chief registrar of the the Supreme Court and secretary to the LPPC, Ahmed Saleh, said in a press conference that where he announced the names of new SAN at 119th general meeting of the LPPC on Friday “as a mark of excellence to the under listed members of the legal profession.”

The 21 lawyers were selected after an interview of the 50 shortlisted candidates held on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Keyamo who is also a lawyer to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission was shortlisted for the first interview last year but to fail make the final list.
This was learnt that this is his second time of trying his hand on earning SAN.

Saleh added that the 21 lawyers would be sworn in on September 21 at a special court session marking the beginning of the 2015/2016 legal year.
With the success of the 21 applicants, the list of lawyers . both living and death, with SAN title would be brought to 408 since the title was first conferred since 1975.

SAN title comes with special privileges to those are conferred with it. It is given to lawyers who have been practicing for over 10 years and must have distinguished themselves in the law profession.

Most equate noise, self promotion and public nuisance to erudition and distinguish advocacy

No doubt,Festus Keyamo is a nice lawyer but aside from the internal politics involved in the awarding of SAN,it is often very difficult for radical Lawyers to get it.
Every good student of history will remember how Gani Fawehinmi was constantly messed up by this board, not until Gani was awarded the 'senior advocate of the masses'(SAM) by the National ass.of Nigerian students. It became so embarrassing to the authorities because they knew one of the most informed mind in juristprudence was yet to be conferred with the honour of SAN and then their hands were forced into approving it.
