my broda before anything there was something already...in regard to ur not liking masquerade, it was part of the igbo tradition before the coming of christianity! Its one of d reasons I always travel for xmas, just for d fun sake

As for me, one aspect of my culture that I detest is the overly wasteful process (my own personal opinion) involved in presenting kolanut. I understand the process very well and can appreciate its social function, but the time wasted is simply an annoyance to me. I'm only speaking for Ngwa. I can't speak for other groups, since I don't know what sort of process they go through.

So, your problem is with the pre-Christian religious practices of the Igbo, am I right?


What I personally don't like: the fact that the extended family/kindred system still plays a very powerful role in events like marriages and burials. Maybe it was of some use back when everyone lived together and did everything together with their kindred. Now, I think it's just a burden.

Socialising with one's kin, I don't have a problem with. But when some distant, distant great-uncle who I'd probably not recognise if we ran into each other in a market and who has to be told over and over what my name is...when such an uncle takes centre stage in deciding what and what my prospective in-laws must produce before marriage rites for my sister can commence, because he so happens to be the oldest member of my umunna, that just drives me nuts.
