As the governing All Progressives Congress gets set to appoint a chairman for its Board of Trustees, a group with ties to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on the leadership of the party to appoint the former VP into the position.
APC is set to appoint the BoT Chair at a meeting slated for July 20 in Abuja and feelers from the party secretariat shows that the race to the chairmanship position is largely between Atiku and a former Governor of Lagos state, Bola Tinubu, a senior leader of the party.
Adamawa Think Tank, comprising of politicians and professionals from Adamawa state, Saturday, said Atiku is the best bet because according to them, “he fits the office”.
The chairman of the group, Danladi Danasabe, who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES over the telephone said “the party at present is enmeshed in crisis following the election of new leaders for the national assembly and what we need is a person with experience in handling such issues to come on board and take us back on track”.
He also said it would be wrong to “even consider Tinubu, because he is part of the problem”.
“All that is happening now is because Tinubu tried to impose some people on our lawmakers and they rejected, so appointing him now with a view to solving the problem simply amounts to a judge presiding over his own case,” Mr. Danasabe said.
He added although the former Lagos Governor made tremendous sacrifice leading to the success of the APC, he said, his “brand of politics and approach to issues may lead to a serious crash”.
Vanguard reported on Saturday that in spite of opposition from some members of the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, odds still favour Mr. Tinubu.
The paper reported that some NWC member fear that Mr. Tinubu may use the office to attack most them especially the National Chairman of the party, John Oyegun, as well as the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, who are both in his bad books following the National Assembly leadership election.

It's highly unlikely that Atiku will get the position mainly coz staunch Buhari loyalists don't trust him and suspect he may use the role to weaken the presidency in preparation for another likely shot at the presidency come 2019.

According to the APC’s constitution and the decision of the NEC, some of the party’s chief who will be inaugurated as members of the BoT comprise President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a national leader of the APC, Bola Tinubu.

The national chairman of the APC, John Oyegun, Senate President Bukola Saraki, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, all APC governors, all past governors (whether civilian or military), two senators representing each of the six geo-political zones and a member representing each state and the FCT also to be included.

Now, when you consider that Atiku is perceived to have supported the Saraki and Dogora's PDP collabo (which went against the party's official position), and the fact that both rebels do not enjoy the support of the majority of their fellow APC senators and reps, and that Tinubu is considered to be a more formidable political asset (he controls the entire SW structure of the party and has Northern loyalists in both the Senate and HOR from the NW, NE [lawan comes to mind], NC [Akume and Gemade], the former and current SW APC governors - including Oshiomole - are in Tinubu's camp, Kwankwanso is in his camp, El-Rufai is also in his camp, Amaechi would also likely vote for Tinubu considering that he was very instrumental in persuading Tinubu not to abandon Buhari right before the presidential primaries, amongst others) compared to Atiku (whose political currency keeps dwindling by the day even in his own Adamawa homestate -- his candidate lost to the current governor during the last Governorship primaries). It's pretty certain that Buhari himself would prefer Tinubu to occupy the post than Atiku. Based on the aforementioned facts, it's easy to understand why even Vanguard tipped Tinubu to nick the post.

It would be in the best interest of Buhari to support Tinubu. Atiku has his eyes on the presidency, so he would use such position to challenge Buhari.

U have no knowledge of how d mind of d average northern muslim works nor how politics in Nigeria works.
The average northern muslim will forever be comfortable wt one of their own viz Saraki forget all d noise abt party supremacy etc,thats just to decieve whoever is unfortunate to listen.Buhari will forever be more comfortable wt an Atiku,Saraki,etc over a Tinubu.
The average Nigerian politician also knows immediately Tinubu is sidelined,his foot soldiers in d southwest immediately will line up behind who ever holds d carrot,this time Buhari,and after all,Tinubu's influence has been shown not to exceed 5 or 6 states.
