Their role is different and each is a boss in her own making ....

The NSA can advice the CDS through information sharing while the CDS can also advice the NSA through Information sharing..... NSA can not command the CDS vice versa but can Advice ...... The Service Chiefs can not also command one another but can advice though their ranks may differ in terms of seniority !!!

NSA/CDS can also slug it out before the president while arguing in the situation room .... NSA is the head of Intelligence and Secret Police while CDS is the coordinator of all Service Chiefs Army, Air force and Navy.

The President is their Oga ontop ..... NSA/CDS can advice the president to command any of them !!

In terms of career and hierarchy, the CDS is superior but the NSA is more influential due to it's closeness to the president and his advisory role to the C-in-C

The NSA is a political role. Its not just reserved to retired soldiers. Anybody can be NSA, at the discretion of the president. But he chooses ex soldiers cos dey know the terrain more. An NSA is only influential cos he's last security voice the president listens to.
While dat of the CDS is a purely professional role. it must be occupied by a top military officer. As number one military man. In the military era, he's usually the 2nd in command to the head of state as CHIEF OF GENERAL STAFF.


Just like SSG and chief of staff, COS is influential, but SSG is recognised and superior.

CDS appears more powerful, NSA more influential. We hear that the CDS does not actually command forces directly ...he is actually not like a chief of staff of all the armed forces but the most senior officer in charge of the joint Chiefs . Presidents bypass them CDS regularly but the NSA always has the ear of the President.

NSA is faaaaaar Superior to CDS. NSA is equivalent to a Minister and he coordinates overall intelligence and Counter-terrorism issues. He coordinates National Intelligence Agency, Department for State Security, Defence Intelligence Agency etc. No Service Chief report to him directly.

The CDS is a Service Chief. He's the Head of the Armed Forces (Army, Navy and Airforce) but he isn't a cabinet member. His actions must be in consonance with the overall strategy of the Defence Minister.

Oga, the NSA is faaaaaaar influential and Superior than CDS but the NSA area of responsibility is majorly on counter-terrorism and Intelligence coordination. The NSA is not meant for "boys" but for men. The CDS is like the Operation Head, while the Defence Minister is responsible for giving direction.

No country can do without National Security Adviser.

NSA

The NSA adviser is the most senior than CDS because he has more seniority years ahead of CDS in NDA for example Olonisakin was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1981 aa a member of 25th regular combatants course.While Major General Babagana Monguno is a member of 21 regular combatants course.

NSA has a political appointee makes it more superior than CDS. The President appoint the NSA based on trust but the CDS is like a civil servant which the president does not have a choice than to appoint CDS. The President will listen more to NSA.

The CDS reports to the President through the Defence Minister according Nigerian military order of command, while the NSA reports directly to the President cos he is a cabinet level minister. He is the Minister supervising national intelligence, both domestic (DSS) and external (NIA), and ex officio, the Principal security adviser to the President. A country can do without a CDS but can never without an NSA.

The NSA is atleast a class ahead of the CDS. The right comparison shuld be bw the DGs of DSS and NIA and the CDS.
