RichyBlacK:

Unfortunately, they are never given to promising students. If those scholarships meant for undergrad studies are given to promising students, there would be a transparent selection process based on merit for the target demographic. However, the reality is that those pot-bellied goons waste the scholarships on hoards of dullards who go abroad, switch courses to easy liberal studies programs (how can those empty skulls cope with more challenging programs?), party year-round and flush tons of wad down the toilet and come back to Nigeria with empty heads and too much gragra. Pathetic lowlifes!

GBAMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!
Besides, i will like to see the stats of those that has enjoyed this and what they have contributed to the Nigerian/ Lagos economy or even the development.

I understand cutting medical treatments abroad but cutting scholarships?  history has shown, it's counterproductive to reduce budget deficits by cutting funding in education.  Ronald Reagan did this and we saw a rise in inner city decay of the US. Suspending scholarships is just extreme.

There's an unfair stereotype that someone who studies Sociology or Art history is intellectually inferior to someone who studies Engineering or medicine.  I guess Sigmund Freud should have studied a more challenging degree. For Nigeria to grow, we need a diverse group of intellectuals and not everyone studying to work in a bank or Oil firm.  Now of course degrees like General studies are umm questionable.

I don't understand the hoopla over cutting scholarship funding to schools abroad.

Rather the money be spent on improving the education facilities at home.

can't both being done at the same time? developing education facilities at home should be a priority but it's dishonest to claim schooling abroad programs is eating up the state budget

if you people are saying fashola is doing well.why not start a poll and see if Fashola would beat Yar adua in 2011. This is the way to go. Find out how well fashola would do in the presidential races.

Someone do a poll.

to all the pple singing this guys praise, are you guys trying to make me believe he is not syphoning public funds and taking back hands some how?
i remember one former Military administrator of Lagos By name Buba MArwa whom most people would say is the best thing to happen to Lagos. Did he not launch his Airline a few months after leaving office?
Re: Meltdown: Fashola Bans Foreign Medical Treatment by davidif: 7:52pm On Mar 10, 2009
The fact that the Nigerian educational system is pathetic beyond measure is one of the biggest understatements, instead of Fashola sending this people abroad so that they can get a proper education he is cutting the scholarships, he would rather spend the money planting trees and building skyscrapers.

What's the craze about foreign education. Can't this very intelligent, but undigent, students be granted scholarships to study in OAU, UI, UNN, ABU etc.
Re: Meltdown: Fashola Bans Foreign Medical Treatment by osisi2(f): 10:46pm On Mar 10, 2009
We need to give credit to Fashola's wife.
He must be the husband of one wife and a smart woman at that.
His mate in Bauchi is busy jumping from one bed to another, servicing 4 known wives and God knows how many concubines and this man is thinking of how to improve his state.
Behind every succesful man is a great woman giving him the support without which he couldn't succeed.

the article said IMMEDIATE SUSPENSION of scholarships, it's a betrayal to the kids abroad depending on the scholarship. you can gradually divert the scholarships to local schools but to suspend it immediately is just gra gra.

.

I think this is referring to only new applications.

And please, Nigerians need to stop crying about the move.
When governors are not doing their jobs, Nigerians are crying and when they do their jobs, Nigerians are still crying.
What exactly do you guys want?

I wonder why this country can not move forward!

Bamidele, who rolled out the measures adopted by the state Executive Council and Body of Permanent Secretaries, stressed that the move became necessary for all tiers of government to re-order their priorities in the light of prevalent world economic realities.

According to the commissioner, the following measures were directed to be taken by the state Executive Council:

*The immediate suspension of expenditure on frills such as gifts, T-Shirts, fez caps and other sundry public relations items.

*The suspension of non-essential international and local travels while travels considered essential must be approved by the governor.

*Running of all new foreign scholarships, although on going local and foreign scholarships will be maintained.

*Running costs of ministries, departments and agencies to be maintained at current levels, and

*The suspension of foreign medical treatment except in cases where medical treatment is not available locally.

and learn what?? Xavier, what are this people learning? You obviously have not been outside the country to a really good university or you would understand that there is a huuuuuuuuuuuuge gap in our universities and the one here especially in science. Imagine, the average Nigerian graduate can't even use Microsoft Excel or Powerpoint to make matters worse, engineering students don't even know how to use matlab or Java and he is supposed to be a student.

Xavier, look at what they are doing in the medical field in other countries, then come back and talk.

Re: Meltdown: Fashola Bans Foreign Medical Treatment by lacrimose(f): 6:36am On Mar 11, 2009
@ topic, the scholarship he is talking about are for people going to "grad schools" in foreign countries funded by the government. The problem is that most people don't return after getting their masters or their advanced degrees. The sad thing is that they get paid their usual monthly salary, and allowance while going to school as well. The government don't have any bidding document that makes sure all these government officials return after their advanced degrees. Most recipients are engineering and science students. People who usually go for six months are usually senior staff, Directors and co.

Canceling scholarship funds for senior staff- good idea
Canceling scholarship funds for junior technical staff- bad idea, (The government just need to make sure they come back after their studies, if not it becomes a bad investment)

What re u advocating then, that we continue to neglect our own universities and keep spending hard fx in the training of our young ones in foreign schools? This doesnt seem logical to me.
Re: Meltdown: Fashola Bans Foreign Medical Treatment by davidif: 1:09am On Mar 12, 2009
xavier, what i am trying to say is that if the govt sponsors this kids, then they automatically have a J-1 visa which means that immediately after school, they are sent back home and no american company can hire them.

Also, education does not seem to be a priority for mr. fashola at all, he seems to be planting trees and building skyscrapers left and right instead of focusing on the fact that lagos has one of the worst public school systems in the world. All it takes is just 120 million dollars to build a world class medical school (20 for faculty and 100 for the facility) and a lot less for an engineering college but the man does not seem to be bothered about that at all. It seems that the people advising him are not innovative at all, they are just some people who live in yanki (mostly from new york or texas) and came back and wanted to bring yanki back with them without realizing how different both places are.

I think that is a wrong misconception. He just opened a new LUTH hospital in Ikeja.  5 martenity hospitals are currently under construction in Lagos. That Gagada (sp?) hospital is currently going throug a makeover and will become a LUTH- specialist hospital for kidney and heart.

public school are under renovation including furnitures to them. students are also getting free books.

just because the thread focus on the roads, bridges and demolition, does not mean that the only thing he is doing.

Does he have a long way to go absolutely. And you need to impove infastructure (roads, buildings, enviroment), for you can get foreign investment, so that govt can get the money to provide social amenities (hospitals, etc.)
