Echoes Of Lost Love (part 1) by Nobody: 12:45pm On Jul 16, 2015
Tony was doing some laundry work when his
phone rang. He hurried out of the laundry room in
excitement. He seems to have been expecting his
mom to call and tell him that she has credited his
account but he was disappointed when he saw a
strange number. He angrily dropped the
phone, hissed and returned to work and didn’t care
to know who the person was. His phone rang a
second, third and fourth time, he didn’t pay
attention to the phone, instead he was whistling as
he enjoyed his washing. The phone continued to
ring. By now he was getting impatient and wanted
to know who the caller was. He picked and the
voice that spoke out of the phone was his
girlfriend’s.

Lucy deliberately called him from a pay phone
because she knew he would not pick any call from
her own number. They’ve had a problem in their
relationship for about two months. She is sad and
depressed because Tony wouldn’t want to hear
anything from her. The last message she received
from Tony even made her sick. Tony expressed his
displease about what she did to him and told her
he really wants to break up with her. She cried for
days and wished she hadn’t offended Tony.

“But this offense is pardonable. Have I done the
worst thing on earth? Tony must be joking o, Okay,
let me keep to myself and see if he will come back
to me.” She has said this to herself but it didn’t work.

“Now, this is getting serious, I would have traveled
to his station and work things out, maybe if he
sees me, he will pardon me but I can’t. What
excuse am I going to give to my mom? What if I
get to him and he treats me like a pariah” She
sobbed

Immediately Tony picked the call, she was excited
but at same time confused. She didn’t even know
what to say to him.

“Tony, I am glad you eventually….”

Interrupted by Tony at the other end

“Haven’t I warned you not to call me again? Okay, I
see you don’t understand the message I have been
passing across to you. I promise to make you
understand today. For weeks now, I have spent
more time wishing we had never met than wanting
to make up with you. In fact I have moved on. I
now have a new girlfriend. You should also move
on. I don’t care about you.” Tony said angrily

Lucy cuts in “But Tony I am sorry. I know I am not worth a second chance but please for God’s ….”
Tony hissed at the other end, continued;
“I don’t have a friend in you, I am comfortable with
the male and female friends I have here. In fact, I
have my family and that is enough. I don’t care
about you. Don’t call me again. Get lost!”
He hanged up the phone, Smiled and walked
majestically to the laundry room and hurriedly
rinsed the clothes he already washed, packed the
ones he was yet to wash, dumped them in one
corner of his room, entered his bathroom and
took a shower. He hardly bathe for two minutes
before he ran out of the bathroom, excited and
dancing.

“Wow, she called again. I can’t believe it. Yes! I love
how I talked to her. Now she’ll know it is not good
to toil with my feelings but what if…” A grimace immediately reflected in his facial
expression.

“…but what if she takes me serious already? I
didn’t mean what I said o, I was just bluffing. I
think I should stop hurting her and even myself. I
really need this babe.”

He picked his phone and stared at his screen saver
for few seconds, he thought within himself.

“What an innocent young lady, I love you more
than life.”

Now talking to the picture on his screen saver;

“Lucy, I promise never to give up on you, I
promise never to leave you for another daughter
of Eve.”

Tony won’t still call her and tell her he was sorry
for talking to her in that manner. By now he is
planning to play the so called game for three more
days before he eventually make up with Lucy.

“Nothing do me abeg. I will make her feel the pain
for more days, then I will call and make up with
her.” He grinned.

Tony had planned to hang out with John and Victor
later in the evening of that same day. These three
guys are best friends. Call Victor the Ladies’ guy
and adviser of women affairs, gentle and easy
going. He wouldn’t even hurt an ant. John on the
other hand doesn’t care about how anybody feels.
He has boasted so many times that no lady can
break his heart because his heart is made of
stone. He was even the one that advised Tony to
make sure that Lucy begs for a long time before he
makes up with her.

******6:35PM******

The three friends were already together at a bar in
an Hotel. Tony with a bottle of Farouz and a plate
of roasted meat, Victor ordered Fanta and chicken
and in front of John were three bottles of
Goldberg. Two down and the third bottle was just
a quarter full. They were making jocular vibes and
laughing heartily. John and Victor came with their
girl friends. It was then that Tony wished Lucy was
there with him. He recalled how cool they used to
be. The greatest wish he had for that moment was
to hear Lucy’s voice over the phone and tell her
how sorry he really felt and how much he had
missed her. He didn’t know when he voiced out

“Lucy, I have missed you.”

Immediately John heard what Tony said, he
laughed and started making jest of him.

“Guy, you had better not kill yourself. Girls will
come and girls will go but guys will always be
guys. If that your babe loves you, let her prove it
by coming here and end what she started. Abeg,
no kill yourself for here o. Coward.” He laughed
out loud again.

The two ladies together with Victor yelled at John
and persuaded Tony to call Lucy. Tony felt really
bad but he pretended to be okay.

“Nothing do me abeg. I just dey miss her but that
one no mean sey I wan follow her talk.”

He was afraid of being thought weak.
Few minutes later, the friends departed

****9:30PM****

Tony lay on his mattress. He was busy with his
phone, checking his photo gallery. He was
checking through Lucy’s pictures. He has really
missed her but he still wouldn’t call her and settle
their differences. It was time to sleep. Tony switched off the bed-side lamp leaving only the colored bulb on. The room became dimmed and few minutes later, he was heard snoring heavily.
