The bandage falls, and belief becomes conviction. Liberation and redemption lie only in conviction! I am addressing serious seekers only. They must be able and willing to examine this matter objectively! Religious fanatics and irresponsible enthusiasts may hold aloof, for they are detrimental to the Truth. As for the malevolent and prejudiced, they shall find their sentence in the very words.

The Message will strike only those who still carry within them a spark of truth, and the yearning to be true human beings. To all such it will become the shining light and staff. It will lead them unswervingly out of all the chaos of the present-day confusion.

The following Word does not bring a new religion, but is intended as the torch to help all serious listeners or readers find the right path, which leads them to the longed-for height.

Only he who bestirs himself can advance spiritually. The fool who uses extraneous aids for this, in the form of the ready-made opinions of others, only walks his path as if on crutches, while ignoring his own healthy limbs. But the moment he boldly uses all the abilities which lie dormant within him awaiting his call, to help in his ascent, he is employing the talent entrusted to him in accordance with his Creator’s Will, and will easily overcome all obstacles that seek to divert him.

Therefore awake! Genuine faith lies only in conviction, and conviction comes solely through an inflexible weighing and examining! See that you are truly alive in the wonderful Creation of your God!

Abd-ru-shin (civil name Oskar Ernst Bernhardt) was born on April 18, 1875, in Bischofswerda, Germany. After being educated and trained in business, he established himself in Dresden. In the years that followed, he made many journeys abroad and wrote a number of travel books, stories, and plays.

Mr. Bernhardt’s travels took him through numerous countries in Europe, the Orient, and North America, bringing him into personal contact with peoples of many classes and cultures. After residing for a time in New York, he journeyed to England, moving to London in 1913. There, the outbreak of World War I took him unawares. On account of his German citizenship, he was imprisoned in 1915 and interned on the Isle of Man for the duration of the war.

The seclusion of internment brought with it an inner deepening. After returning to his homeland in the Spring of 1919, Mr. Bernhardt soon became conscious of his task: to open the path for mankind to a new knowledge of Creation. In 1923, he began writing spiritually-themed essays & lectures under the pen name “Abdruschin” and later “Abd-ru-shin”, and by 1937, the lectures which constitute the Grail Message were completed.

By this time Abd-ru-shin had long since settled in the Austrian Alps, but his activity ended abruptly with the seizure of power by the Nazis on March 12, 1938. He was arrested on the very same day, and his property and possessions were taken.

After an imprisonment of several months, Abd-ru-shin was placed under house arrest together with his family in northern Germany. The Gestapo kept him under constant surveillance. He utilized these years of confinement to edit and arrange the lectures of the Grail Message into their present sequence, but he was forbidden from publicizing his writings or making contact with readers of the Grail Message.

Unable to continue his work, Abd-ru-shin died on December 6, 1941.

The name “Abd-ru-shin” is of Persian-Arabian origin, translating generally as “Son, Workman, or Servant of the Light”. Abd-ru-shin did not compile his Message from other teachings of ancient or modern times; his living knowledge was drawn from out of the purest and highest Source. As every work allows conclusions to be drawn about its author, so may the personality of Abd-ru-shin be recognized from his work.

The Grail Movement

Beginning in the late 1920’s, individuals began to gather together who wished to live their lives according to the principles put forth in the Grail Message. Such activity continues to this day, as devoted readers meet to deepen their understanding of the Grail Message, raise public awareness about the book, and to hold Hours of Worship and Festivals. Non-profit publishing companies have also arisen in countries across the globe, as In the Light of Truth: The Grail Message continues to be translated into more and more languages.

Today, the “International Grail Movement” is a collective term for efforts to spread the knowledge of the Grail Message and to realize it in all walks of life. The movement is not a legal organization, but simply an informal association of adherents of the Grail Message around the world.

It should be noted that Abd-ru-shin himself neither formed nor formally supported any religious or spiritualist organization, and the Grail Message always and only encourages the reader to cultivate his or her own personal convictions and individual nature. In the words of the author:

“I do not speak to churches and political parties, to fraternities, sects and societies, but only in all simplicity to man himself.”
