One of the most basic theories of criminology maintains that when there is a crime, punishment should follow. If in a society there is a crime without commensurate punishment, then such society runs the risk of disintegration. Thus, every functioning society must have a set of punishments which have been generally agreed as consequence for potential crimes. Even though these punishments may not be mentioned, everyone is well aware, even if only passively, of such punishments that may be met out for crimes committed.

A god wins his people's faithfulness using this cardinal criminology theory. Hence, sinners will not go unpunished. A pastor wins his congregation's ardent followership, in so far as they are continually reminded of excommunication for "crimes" (or sins) against the church.

Unfortunately in the Nigerian society crimes are going unpunished. Traffic laws are not obeyed nor are fines instituted or enforced. Sexual assault, domestic violence and battery are not punished by courts, neither are the perpetrators jailed following revelations they actually committed these crimes. Instead, what you have are endless court cases that eventually end in ridiculous bails.

This debacle doesn't stop here. The political lot who have done more harm than repeated bouts of Ebola epidemics also enjoy same ridiculous bail conditions for obvious crimes that they should have been jailed for.

As long as Nigeria continues to disobey this cardinal rule of criminology, the country will continue to perpetuate a society whose fabric is loose, in tatters and unable to sustain sensible human living.

What do you think?
