Submitting CV Manually: How To Prepare & Package Your File by Nobody: 6:40pm On Jul 29, 2015 |
Dear Nairaland and CV experts, I would like to know the best way to prepare the entire file containing my CV for manual submission. I have some envelopes and I have made photocopies of all necessary documents. My questions are: 1. Should I include an application letter or cover letter? What if the position is not advertised? 2. How do I address the envelope? Am starting the hunt tomorrow and this info may help others out there so I need experienced advice. Thanks and God bless you all. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Martins301:I'm not an expert but I will tell you what I think. .. In addition to your Cv and credentials, it will be nice you add an application letter or cover letter . The letter should be addressed to the HR manager of the company in question(This is what should be written behind the envelopes too). In the letter, emphasise your skills, experiences and achievements, what you look to achieve for the company, a little about what you know about the company (kinda praising them), most importantly tailor the letter to suit what you think the company wants or their core values(you can get this from their websites).... if you've any business idea for the company, give a glimpse of it hoping they call you to hear the full gist Remember the letter should be peculiar to each company. Above all, pray they get to go through your application because a lot end up in the trash bin. Also pray to find favour in the eyes of the gatemen.. Don't worry, you'll be lucky ok? You can also submit your CVs online to companies. Be encouraged, getting employment no easy for Naija. But there's light at the end of the tunnel. . I really wish you the best *If I remember anything, I will come back and edit* 41 Likes 3 Shares |

I think it's jst submitting a copy of ur credentials. Everything u intend writing on the letter is already included in ur cv. My opinion tho... stand to be corrected |

dabexy:The skills may already be mentioned in your CV but the letter gives you the opportunity of elaborating those skills and experiences in line with what you think the company wants.. you can also add other perks in the letter. ... |

attach an application letter or cover letter to your cv. that is a big plus. also make sure you cv justification, font size and theme fonts ( TIMES NEW ROMAN is recommended ) should also be taken into consideration. |

Martins301: In readiness for posting whether through Post Office or otherwise, the followings should be arranged and stapled together sequentially, and neatly put in a correctly addressed envelope: 1. Application/cover letter 2. Curriculum Vitae 3. Photocopies of credentials Goodluck. 2 Likes |

I really wish you the best I submitted my CV with application letter yesterday for the first time and I included almost all of the points you highlighted in my application letter. But I wrote the application letter with my pen on an A4 paper (not typed), hope this won't backfire @ me? |

MarvellousGod I am of the view that it'll be better to send applications via post office if you choose manual method, my investigation shows that so doing it'll get to the person it was addressed to, why as if you go in person the gateman might deny you entry or the receptionist might not even accept the letter from you if he/she is aware that it's a job hunt because at times they receive instruction from management not to accept such. Waiting to hear from xfire and jarus . 3 Likes |

Here's what I think. Your envelop should contain your enticing CV , photocopies of credentials and an application letter. The post applied for on the application letter could be something you have experience in or a role you are confident that you will most likely be called for an interview. For Example, someone who studied microbiology, chemistry or biochemistry can apply for the job of a QA/QC laboratory analyst or trainee or assistant or volunteer in manufacturing companies eg FMCGs depending on your experience level and/or what you aim to achieve. The body of the letter should be convincing enough from the first paragraph. KEEP THE LETTER BRIEF and Interesting enough so the HR would want to view your CV. I SUGGEST that you do hand written letters on A4 paper, this way, you can easily write the address of the company when u get to the gate and discover they are accepting hard copy applications. You can also type the letters if you are sure they will accept it. Expect loooooooads of disappointment at the gate of companies as security will tell you that they do not accept applications. When you get to the gate, tell the security that you want to see the HR, don't tell them you want to submit application. Be strong, be vibrant, its not easy but its possible..... 1 Like |

@Martins301 Further to what @MarvellousGod and @Prinzofparis said, I would only differ in one point: Sending the letter to the HR Manager. In my opinion (experience), HR managers don't make the call for vacancies. The unit/department in need of a skill places the request to the HR manager. If the HRM gets your letter, he/she may chose to send it out to the perceived department you best fit or simply look through the vacancy listing and if none exists, dumps your letter in KIV (keep in view) hopefully. However, I'd add that you take time out and research the company you are sending it to. Find out the department you are interested in, and then send your letter (CV and cover letter) to the head of the department. He/she may not exactly have an opening, but seeing your well packaged letter can make him/her think you'd fit in well and then he/she would send a requirement to the HRM. Thats just how I feel...and that's what worked for me. Cheers. 6 Likes |
