5 luxury saloons that have passed without sorrow or glory

Like many cars unfairly valued by automotive history, there have also been many others that have failed to shine despite having good weight reasons. On this occasion we present five saloons that may well have succeeded, but never reached glory in a segment dominated by the Germans.

Alfa Romero 2000 Saloon (1958-1962)

Only 2,799 units of the Alfa Romeo 2000 Saloon left the production line during its barely five years of life. Naturally, the clientele preferred to opt for other models and the 2000 Saloon became a truly exclusive car. The testers of the time defined it as a fabulous engineering work. Its chassis was at the height of a 2.0-liter 105 HP engine capable of launching this sedan above 160 km / h top speed. However, its high price made it one of the Alfa Romeo models that have been sold more slowly.

De Tomaso Deauville (1971-1988)

It was a luxurious sedan exhibited for the first time at the 1970 Turin Motor Show. It was powered by the same 5.7-liter Cleveland V8 block that gave life to the De Tomaso Pantera, with a power of 330 hp. The Deauville achieved a maximum speed of 230 km / h, at the same level as the Maserati Quattroporte. For the Deauville the inspiration of the Jaguar XJ became clear. Despite the tempting recipe of having an elegant saloon of high flights, customers were not in the job of buying it and only 244 copies were created in 17 years.

Lexus LF-30 Electrified Concept, anticipating the brand’s electrical future

Lexus was a pioneer among luxury brands when it comes to electrification, as the company launched its first hybrid vehicle in 2005 in the form of RX 400h. However, in the development of electric cars is another story, although now it seems that it is addressing the problem. Taking advantage of the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, the Japanese firm has presented the Lexus LF-30 Electrified Concept.

At first glance, it may not seem too bulky, but the LF-30 Electrified Concept is quite large: it measures 5,090 millimeters long, 1,995 mm wide and 1,600 mm high, with a generous 3,200 mm wheelbase. Consequently, it is not a featherweight with its 2,400 kilos of mass, but it is understandable considering that it integrates a total of four electric motors, one for each wheel.

This configuration allows the vehicle to operate in front, rear or four-wheel drive, depending on driving conditions. All of them can receive up to 543 HP of power and 700 Nm of torque. According to Toyota‘s premium subsidiary, the prototype is capable of reaching 100 km / h in 3.8 seconds and 200 km / h top speed. Its expected autonomy is 500 km, thanks to a 110 kWh battery.

Toyota Ultra-Compact BEV: the perfect electric car for the streets of Japan

After many years of being a leader in hybrid technology, the logical assumption was that Toyota launched into the development of electric motors and batteries. To start this new stage, the Japanese company is committed to a small vehicle, designed to meet the needs of people who regularly take the car for short distances. This is the Toyota Ultra-Compact BEV.

Still in the form of a prototype (it will be launched at the end of 2020 in Japan), the ultra-compact Toyota is only 2,490 mm long, 1,290 mm wide and 1,550 mm high; It’s like a dwarfed version of a Smart EQ Fortwo. Logically, the cabin only has space for two passengers. The approximate autonomy is 100 kilometers with a single load, while the maximum speed is 60 km / h.

Given the specifications, it is not surprising that Toyota plans to position the vehicle in buyers in urban areas, where an extremely short turning circle should also be of great help. Charging the Toyota Ultra-Compact from 0 to 100% requires five hours with a 200-volt charger and, for the moment, there is no specified fast charging capacity.

How to choose, when to change, where to store: 5 eternal questions about winter tires

Winter tires are a strange subject: everybody seems to be changing shoes regularly, every year, but nonetheless, questions always arise every autumn. Someone can solve them independently, but someone else does not have enough experience. So we are going to fix this.

WHEN DO I NEED TO REVIEW?
This is one of the most popular questions.

In practice, guided by the issue of re-shoes is primarily logic. The threshold temperature at which summer tires fully retain their grip is usually about 5-7 degrees. That is, you don’t need to wait for frosts and especially the first snow: when the average daily temperature drops below 5-7 degrees, it is worthwhile to proactively change the tires to winter ones. This will solve two issues at once: firstly, you don’t have to think about how summer tires will behave in conditions of low temperature, and secondly, frosts will not take you by surprise.

WHAT TIRES TO CHOOSE – SPIKED OR “VENTILY”?
The answer to the question of choosing between studded and non-studded tires depends primarily on the operating conditions, and a little more on personal preferences. What is Velcro. The Velcro, or friction tire, provides adhesion to the surface due to the softer composition of the rubber compound and a larger number of thin transverse lamellas than studded tires. Such a tire works optimally on loose snow and in large cities, where roads are watered with reagents or sprinkled with salt. Wet and dry asphalt, slush, liquid snow porridge are those coatings where the friction tire will perform best due to good drainage and uniform grip. Well, another obvious advantage of such models is a lower noise level.

Studded tires have their advantages: they work better in conditions of minimal adhesion to the surface, that is, on ice and rolled snow. Loose snow for them is also not an obstacle, but there the advantages of spikes go by the wayside. But at transient near-zero temperatures or during a thaw, when a slippery road is covered with a thin layer of water, they will be much more effective than frictional ones – the loss of adhesion will be partially leveled by spikes.

For mom, wife and girlfriend: choose a new first car for a woman

Someone is waiting for this question, and someone is afraid, but, as they say, what to be, that cannot be avoided. The phrases “let’s buy me a car” or “help me choose what to buy” arise at different ages and life situations, but the conditions of the task are usually similar. Let’s see what answers the primary market offers, having examined the different options and not going too deep into stereotypes.

It’s important not to delve into stereotypes: it’s far from always necessary just a “small red car with a gun.” The only fair condition for our choice would be an automatic transmission: it really has long been one of the priorities when choosing a car not only for women but also for men.

But the dimensions, body type, etc. will not be limited

In general, we determine the budget, which we denote by the amount of up to 20 – 25 000$, and begin to sort through the options.

Alfa Romeo throws back the sporting models that it had in the creation

The alliance between PSA and FCA has been one of the bombings of the year. They will become the fourth largest manufacturer in the world by volume and surely many changes will come to the different brands. Although the agreement has not yet been fully effective, there have been some strokes of the future of Alfa Romeo recently. The brand was going to be one of the beneficiaries according to the last conference of Sergio Marchionne, although now it seems that some models have been left along the way.

If in these estimates for 2022 we saw exciting examples such as the Alfa Romeo GTV or the 8C, now we have directly chosen to ignore them. This was recently announced by Mike Manley, CEO of FCA, during a presentation of the financial results to investors. The manager claimed that reducing this product portfolio also reduces expenses. It is still too early to say if these sports models have been postponed for some time in the future or if they have been completely eliminated.
