Augmented driving: Honda came up with a new way to interact with the car

At the CES Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, Honda will introduce a new technology for communicating with an unmanned vehicle and let everyone test it.

The other day we complained that Honda is not going to revive the iconic S2000 roadster yet, but is only preparing to celebrate its 20th anniversary with a kind of restyling, but at a new technological level, a walking sports car, as it turned out, is still possible. The car is called Honda Augmented Driving Concept and, judging by the teaser, it is a convertible with retro-style elements and a 2 + 2 landing formula. Nothing has been reported about the power plant (it is most likely electric), but it is known that the concept is equipped with an autonomous driving system, in which a person can intervene at any time.

All controls are tied to a steering wheel with a touch rim. To conditionally start the power plant, it is enough to pat him twice. To accelerate, you need to press the steering wheel, that is, move it away from you, and for braking you need to pull on yourself. Simple and clear. The trick is that artificial intelligence is constantly included in the management process and monitors the person, trying to recognize his intentions based on modern data processing technologies. Thus, a harmonious combination of manual and autonomous control is achieved. Tired of sitting idle? Take it and drive it! Tired of steering? Throw the steering wheel and take a selfie – the electronics will immediately take control and will not let you fly off the road.

However, it is not yet clear how such a body will behave in a collision, because, for example, in sports cars based on monocoque (both metal and carbon fiber) special crush zones are screwed in front and behind, absorbing the kinetic energy of the impact in an accident.

What overload will the driver and passengers experience with typical Euro NCAP and IIHS bumps? How to repair the body, if it still bends something? There are no answers to these questions yet, but frankly, they excite the public much less than the pickup design.

Audi Duo, the diesel plug-in hybrid that was ahead of its time

Now that electrification is here to stay, we are seeing a boom in the supply of plug-in hybrid models, a solution that is quite logical. These vehicles have a combustion engine added to another electric and a battery, gasoline being the main block in most cases. However, some diesel plug-in hybrids also appear to offer a different alternative. Although this technology may seem novel, there is a history that dates back more than two decades ago: the Audi Duo.

It was in 1989 when the four-ring brand would begin its hybrid journey with the presentation of the first Audi Duo at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The familiar Audi 100 Avant (C3) was used with the 2.3-cylinder petrol engine 2.3 and 136 hp. It added a small electric motor of 12 CV and a nickel-cadmium battery (Ni-Cd). From that first Audi Duo, only ten copies were made to test and improve the technology.

Thus, in 1991 a second prototype would arrive with notable advances. In this case, the five cylinders were exchanged for a four-cylinder block of 2.0 liters and 116 hp. The electric motor reached 29 hp and the traction was different. While the previous one was forward, in this one the quattro traction was chosen. It achieved an electrical autonomy of about 80 kilometers (the maximum speed in electric was 65 km / h) and the charge took around eight hours, as you can see, figures that have nothing to envy to the current ones.

Now that Group PSA and FCA are the same reality and go hand in hand in the intricate world of automotive, you can expect some changes that are coming. Today we are not going to talk about models that are coming or going, but about a reaffirmation of the commitment to Jeep electrification. Taking advantage of the CES in Las Vegas, they announce a new denomination for all their plug-in hybrids: 4xe.

Already last year 2019 we saw the first steps of the brand in this area. During the month of March, they presented the Jeep Renegade and Compass Plug-in Hybrid, the plug-in hybrid versions of two of their most successful SUVs. While it is true that the inscription “4x4e” appeared in some parts of its body, there was no proper denomination as such. So now they wanted to simplify and soon we will see the Jeep Renegade, Compass and Wrangler 4xe.

If the plug-in hybrid propulsion systems that they had to date are maintained, we will see a scheme that surprised many. It is the conjunction of the turbocharged petrol engine of four cylinders and 1.3 liters under the hood with another small electrical block that is responsible for moving the rear wheels, achieving total 4x4e or 4xe traction from now on. In the Renegade it had 190 CV of joint power, while in the Compass it reached up to 241 CV. We assume that for the Wrangler the ideal option would be the most powerful.

In any case, the electrical autonomy of these specimens slightly exceeds 50 kilometers and achieves really low emissions, around 50 g / km. Although many details remain to be known about the future family of plug-in hybrids, the truth is that Jeep announces its 4xe designation with a view to the future. Lamborghini Huracán EVO RWD, here comes the expected version of propulsion

It has been a year since the Lamborghini Huracán EVO was introduced, the latest update of the Sant’Agata sports car. Now that it is well established in the market comes a version that is sure to enchant the most purist public. This is the Lamborghini Huracán EVO RWD, the propulsion variant that repeats once again in the Italian brand range. It is not the first time that this configuration is used (see the Lamborghini Huracán LP580-2) and is the same as that of the Audi R8 V10 RWD.

The main difference with respect to the one with total traction is that in this case the atmospheric V10 of 5.2 liters has had to reduce its power to 610 hp and 560 Nm of torque. Although they are 30 hp and 40 Nm less, it is also lighter and stays at barely 1,389 kg. That means that their benefits are not too damaged.
