Grasscutter domestication and business

Though the business of domesticating grasscutters (Thryonomys swinderianus) is known in the here in Nigeria, the sub-region and in other parts of the world, We've not been able to significantly optimise the benefits of grasscutter production for the economy.

Unlike chicken and other meat products that encounter keen competition from imports, the grasscutter virtually has no competition. But the production of grasscutter somehow remains in the category of subsistence farming, placing demand far above supply.

Many of those who patronise the grasscutter meat buy them from hunters who use hunting dogs or people specialised in trapping the grasscutter in the wild.

Grasscutters has it.

I chose grasscutters because I like grasscutter more than my goats.

At times goats give more trouble. If they get out they can destroy other people's things.

Grasscutters have bigger litters, and you get more than one [offspring] unlike with the goats.

"They also bring good prices."

Greater Cane Rat popularly known as Grasscutter belongs to the rodent family and is very closely related to the porcupine, almost look alike except that porcupine is bigger.

The spiny fur on the back and rounded nose distinguish Grasscutter from true rats. It reaches a length of about 720 mm when fully matured.

Grasscutter is one of the animal that is extremely suitable for commercial rearing for very good reasons.

To be honest I don't want to offend or discourage any hard working person but last I saw a documentary on snails on Aljazeera they are being destroyed in Florida because they have been declared not good for humans. I don't have details but I know they are searching for snails and destroying them. If you love snail then search for more info about this.

I don't really know much about agriculture, but from the way I view it, grass cutter should be more lucrative, cos of the high demand of meat in the food industry. How many people really eat snails in local canteens?

The meat is widely consumed allover the West Africa region and beyond, making it one of the top 10 animals whose meat is in highest demand in the market.

A market ready Grasscutter is sold between N4,000 to N5,500. Five hundred Grasscuters in a year could earn you between N2 Million to N2.75 Million.

I receive lots of calls and emails daily on various aspects of agriculture and most times I try to do justice and answer them but lately there has been more questions on which one is the most profitable venture between snails and grasscutter.

As much as I will be talking based on my experience am also using this medium to invite all pratical livestock farmers expecially does into snail and grasscutter farming to please contribute and enlighten intending farmers on which to choose between both.

Thanks for your anticipated contributions.
It depends on which part of the country you are in.
