On a recent visit to Lagos I was heading to the airport from ikoyi with a driver and colleague. Just before adeniji Adele bridge I heard a bust tire sound. We all alighted so the tyre could be changed and within a few minutes a languid lad walked from across the multi Lane road. I stood by as the driver rebuffed his so called intent to help. Within a few minutes they had become two. The second must have had one of his eyes popped as he was blind in that eye. He was now more daring and was saying they must be 'settled' as we were in their area. He made a call on his phone and I could decipher him telling who ever it was that there's a big man around. I looked up and saw two more making their way towards us.
I noticed our driver whisper to my colleague and then signaled me to follow him. In quick step he was off across the road, I followed in tow trying to match his pace. He looked back and raised his voice at me to catch up with him. Since I know he could only do that if he was insane I ran after him. One of guys trailed us as we meandered through a plank bridge to emerge within an estate. I heard it's called jakande.
Apparently he had asked the colleague to walk up to the police check point under the bridge who confirmed they, the policemen, agreed to stand guard while the tyre change takes place. But for a fee.
I was advised to take a taxi to a hotel and wait while they sort it out. I gave the driver 7k as he might need it for the 'guard fee'. I went to a hotel on the mainland and let them know my location. They joined me after over an hour. The police stood guard. The tyre was changed. They collected their fee while the hoodlums crossed to the other side trying to stone the party.
I only imagine a female, alone in that situation when it had become dark. Meanwhile the policemen where in sight and just out of hearing range. I'm sure they could make out the scenario but just watched rather. SMH.

I have had a similar experience on that road too. It was when I moved back to Nigeria from Jand in Jan 2008. I had only been in Nigeria for a few days and I was eager to go out. No car had been assigned to me but there was an E-Class in the yard so I took the keys, called my cousin and we headed out.

Apparently, the car had an over-heating problem but I didn't know and lucky enuf we had finished our Waka and we were heading back home(Lekki) from Surulere around 2:30pm when just a few meters from that old NEPA the car just started acting up so I pulled up on the bridge to see wa gwan.

Omo, we hadn't been there for 90secs when a swarm of goons rushed at us. I was confused, 2 stuck their heads in d car from passanger and driver's side, about 3 or 4 came at me and cousin infront of the car proper molesting us.

Next thing sha, I found some guts slammed the hood of the car shut ran into the ride, started it, put the mofo and D and hit the gas mehn. I almost forgot my cousin. As I was moving he struggled to jump in thru the window, as he was struggling one goon still kept on struggling with him. Finally my cousin got and as I was about to hit d gas harder d goon flashed me my fresh phone(Nokia Sirocco) and he said bring money take am. (all this one I was moving o) and I said "abeg na una don collect everything already, abeg na God I take beg u" to my surprise he threw the phone into the car o! Omo just sped off, I didn't even care about the car's condition.

My cousin and I where in shock! Like this guy what just happened? Did we just get robbed? What did they take? What did they take? this guy damnnnn! That was crazy o! Na so we rant till we reach house that day. And mind you this was in the day light o!

So that area is really dangerous!

- What will it cost the government of Ambode to lit up that bridge through IPP?
- What will it cost the CP of Lagos to line up police officers every two poles from Marina to Oworonshoki?
- What will it cost the Federal Government to allow Nigerians (civilians) carry light arms and pepper spray shocked
Yes, you are right. Pepper Spray to the rescue buh you must be sure on whom to use the spray on.

They;ve been there since God knows when...

I had a similar experience there sometimes last year.
I was driving home around 10 pm along same route. As i was ascending the Eko bridge just after Apogbon around that old Nepa building{driving towards contain}, I heard a loud bang!!alas! It was my Tyre. Immediately, I saw some guns running towards me, on sensing their motive i kept driving. Few meters after, I saw a police check point {RRS}. I felt relieved and drive towards them and parked at the lay-by.
As a sharp Lagos dude, I approached them that I want to change my Tyre and at the time narrated my experience.Funny enough they don't even bother about my report. As soon as i get down to work, one of them move closer to me and said "Your money na #2000 o" without arguing with him I said no problem.
While I was there 3 other motorist face the same fate as mine-Busted tyres.
My biggest surprise is that those police officer were aware of the robbers operations around there but decided to leverage on it to extort innocent civilians.
Immediately, I'm thru with my Tyre i drove off without looking back. cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy
Few days later, I decided to observe the spot carefully and i realized there was a very sharp iron that joint the bridges that's causing the havoc.
Since then, I tried as much as I can to avoid the road or be very mindful of the spot while unavoidably driving on the bridge.

This is how armed robbers and killers are allowed to breed in this country especially lagos. Its obvious some of the men of the NPF are conniving with these bandits. They start by buying locally made guns for operations like these as time goes on they save enough to buy assault rifles and machine guns to rob banks and shed blood. The NPF and lagos state govt know these spots and would rather do nothing or enough about it.

Thank you for being a reasonable Nigerian.

It's high time for Nigerians to be allowed to carry concealed weapons. I suggest if that happens then you would see crime reduced and a lot of diaspora folks return.

If it were here then one of the robbers would have taken a 9mm lead to the face for sure from me.

PS: Pepper spray is not for me, it's more for Womens purses. Even the ones the police carry here are specially made. For less than lethal weapons then I prefer the tazer. Besides you can't deploy pepper spray in the situation that the OP described as it will disperse while a 9mm slug will embed itself in the cranium of the would be thief.

We had a close shave on Monday, thanks to the no market day,it would have been another story. Those 3 guys!!! Thank Jesus.
Iluv:
I aim to create awareness about the state of insecurity on our roads at night, especially around traffic hot spots.

I was robbed around some weeks ago on the EKO bridge. Precisely around the spot where the bridge is directly opposite UBA head office. It is worthy to state here that the stretch of the bridge immediately after the down-link leading to Marina till you get to Apongbon is practically not safe while you drive. I hope you all understand my description of the trouble spot here.‎
‎
My story: That fateful evening around 8pm, I was driving home from work and it is normal to experience traffic on the EKO bridge almost from around the CMS part of the bridge till you get past Apongbon(usually on bad traffic days).
‎
I had a female passenger beside me and unfortunately for me, I was low on fuel and decided to wind down the windows both on my side and the passenger side. I only put it down halfway.  I was also hungry and decided to purchase bottled water so I can use that to hold on till I get home. I asked my companion to bring out #100 naira from my wallet which she did and we waded slowly through the traffic looking out for pure water seller.

I was already around that troubled spot, which practically for those familiar with this route, you would find less of hawkers. The hawkers are mostly selling before and around the down-link to marina.

Lo and behold I noticed 3 guys, 2 on my side of the road and 1 on the other side. What struck my alertness was that they were not holding any items to hawk and I wondered what they were doing at that part of the bridge. Almost the same instant I was wondering, one of them pointed towards my car and they all raced down to me and started shouting "Bring the money, your phone". I replied them "which money" only to look at my companion and seeing she was holding the #100 naira and her phone. As a security conscious person, I have always advised not to have phones displayed while driving at night. But as fate would have it, we were caught off guard.

One of the guys had his hand around his waist acting like he was going to pull out a gun, the traffic was at a stand still and the had put their hands over my glass. The thief on the passenger side managed to collect the #100naira while they were still screaming for me to bring phones. Fortunately for me, traffic eased and the driver of the car beside me was carried away observing what was hapening, immediately I drove right into the space with the intention of bashing right into the car infront. I didn't eventually bash the car in front and had to wind up my glasses while on high alert if those guys would come back. They never did and I lost only #100naira to them.

This encounter happened within a 30seconds time frame. I realized if they had a gun, they wouldn't hesitate to bring it out, that's what gave me the courage to drive off.‎

The following day I did not see them, but after about 3weeks of studying that route on my way home, I have discovered a pattern for their activities.

My people be highly conscious of mostly 3 guys around that stretch of the bridge. Sometimes they seat on the bridge side while one other would be walking aimlessly along the bridge looking for cars that have their windows down. The make signs across to each other if that one finds a potential victim and they would all rush to the car.

I also noticed they are off some days, like a day in between times I saw them and I suspect they take a break following a successful attempt at robbing people, maybe to sell stolen items and they are back after that day.
‎
To notice these guys, just watch out for individuals that don't have any items to hawk walking around and crossing between traffic on the bridge aimlessly. Honestly I have a very bad plan for them on a good day. I could have lost more than what they took.‎
‎
This is a call to security agencies especially the Police RRS. There is need to station RRS bike patrols at that part of the bridge.

The white car in the image below is at the tip of the down-link to Marina. This is a picture of the troubled area to help your imagination.

Thanks and please share your stories for enlightenment and also propose solutions for security.

I also had a similar experience in July last year. i was coming back from work around 7.30pm and was just about descending from Marina towards the Apongbon axis, there was a bit of traffic and i had the window on my side rolled down a bit, just enough to be able to breath. A guy came up beside me forcing his fingers into the small window opening. He held the window with one hand and used his other hand to lift up his shirt revealing a shinning metal. He told me to ''mash the break''. Thank God the traffic in my front eased a bit and i was able to maneuver and escape.
On my way home last night on the same axis, i saw a lady driving a Hyundai SUV with her four windows broken, i had to ask her if she was robbed and she told me she was. Please wind up your windows and keep your valuables especially your phones when on Eko bridge.

Tell me if it is not even better to be aware that there is no Police protection and thus be prepared yourself..... than suffer double jeopardy from hoodlums and Criminals in Police Uniforms?

Just this evening around 8pm, around same area OP mentioned, I saw 3 guys on the bridge moving towards Siemens, they were walking fast, I guessed they must have robbed someone.

About a minute down towards Apongbon, I saw three armed policemen going towards them, heard people inside a bus telling the policemen, "they went that way". Also saw the vehicle they had robbed.

We should be safety concious and alert always, avoid placing bags on seats or being visible when passing through such areas, also avoid operating phones too. As much as it's possible wind up your glass too. May God continue to guard us, Amen.

Well, I had an Experience with those guys there. same spot, same Time.

Mine was quite different. My car had issues, and had to push it to my Bro who works in WEMA Towers.

I can tell you categorically That the Push was the Push of Eternity. I was lucky to have met 2 of the Touts on that road, who billed me 3000 naira to help me, with the assurance that i wouldnt get robbed. At first i was like "3K FOR WETIN NA?!!! But then i knew that the road was almost similar to Mile 2 bridge where they Rob you with SLAPS.

So i agreed, and It didnt take 3 minutes during our Push, 2 of those guys appeared talking many things.

The Boys helping me Spoke to them "Omo Wa Leleyi, Shairman E fi eleyi le. (na Our Person, Chairman leave this one).

Im Igbo, who understands Yoruba, But i was all mute. Those animals were looking like Monsters and Barbaric. I can still recognize one of them.

While we were Gliding down the Marina Bridge, we could hear the sound of a Woman Screaming... The Guys with me said ''Them Don dey Rob Person, Shebi we tell you"

Got to Wema bank, Parked the car in their Parking Lot and paid those guys happily, even shared Coke Bottles ...

The Lagos state government needs to Place Policemen there... Actually, they used to have Police men on Bikes there, i dont know why they Stopped them.

Always be Conscious, and always keep windows up when you observe strange people. And Place your Hands on your Horn, incase they try anything. (The Blaring Horn Chases them away).

And for those who board Public Buses, seating close to the windows, and have the habit of pressing their Phones, GIVE YOURSELVES BRAIN.

God Protect us All

This happens almost every day in the morning. At least I sight one or two cases every two weeks and almost robbed twice on dat same eko bridge stretching towards apongbon. I know the government will not do anything about it until one of them get nabbed by the hoodlums. Now they are smashing windscreen and windows with confidence.

The most annoying tin is there is an army barrack/office very close to the dangerous area.....also is a police pickup at cms bustop.

I want to believe the police are part of the crime ring around the area.
