Lol. Sack, you might be allowed to collect the sack letter with well wishes written in it as well as your salary with or without a month's salary. ...for fire, as the name implies, it's very hot and you disappear from wherever you are when you received the call. The accompanying letter is better not read to avoid committing suicide. Layoff/retrenchment, you have hope of being called back if things get back to normal. My thoughts though, 1 Like |

I think sacked and fired means the same thing. I.e being dismised without compensation due to incopetence or not being able to do ur job. Layoff and retrenchment i think goes together and i believe they are diff from being sacked or fired. In this case, i think workers get laid off or retrenched not because they are not doing their job but because the employer cannot continue to foot or afford their wages or salaries due to economic difficulties or constraints, but they get compensated for their dismisal. Just my opinion. |

XTROVAT: You are right. Though the difference comes mainly in the company's perspective. For the employer, is all loss of job or income with a name given to it. |

Sack, fire, retrenchment and layoff to me are the same thing just that retrenchment and layoff are done in bulk and in larger numbers to being sacked or fired which might be one person or a few people. |

The chain that binds the three expressions together throws employees into the labour market. They become jobless and near-,hopeless,with an overwhelming sense of depression. It's one of the worst fates to befall a man. |

Mbkite:sack is when you are relieved of your job because of an office misconduct or general misconduct. And sacked or fired staffs don't get any benefits. Retrenchment is when you are relieved of your job mostly because the organization is doing a general layoff of staff for some organization reasons or restructure or maybe because of economy recession, depression or low patronage. Lay off comes with welfare packages to help the laid off staffs cope after their job loss. Same as redundancy. Sack = fired Retrenchment = redundancy = layoff Your job can be rendered redundant if your department or role is contributing less or nothing to the organization's growth and they consider the job role or department as a waste pipe and decide to render your role and position redundant for the time being. For instance, many organizations in Nigeria will layoff their staffs as a result of economy recession that will come with post-covid-19 pandemic. Those that will be affected will be laid off not because they committed any misconduct but due to general organization situation. Laid off staffs can be recalled. Sacked or fired staff hardly gets recalled unless the staff was fired or sacked based on false allegations and organization later discovers and deems it fit to reinstate the staff to his or her previous position. 2 Likes |

There's really marginal difference amongst them. Sack and fire means the same thing. Layoff and retrench also means the same thing, closely. However, the area of clear difference is where the question of legality comes in. A company can sack or fire you for a misdemeanor on your part (might be the wrong word). A company can layoff or retrench its workers on valid grounds of sustainable operations. For instance, it is ok to layoff or retrench a couple of workers, just to sustain operations. Finally, layoffs and retrenchment comes with benefits, and where absent, can be contested. This is as opposed to when one is sacked or fired. Yeah. |

Sack mean not to continued as member staff of company anymore, gone for life. Fire mean to be warned and under maybe to sack. Lay- off mean, maybe there is some financial problems, where company can't longer pay, there give some staff lay-off to go home and rest till the financial problems solved or not called anymore. Why retrenchment mean to reduced some staff after the company could not meet daily profit. |
