Sack and Fire= loss of job resulting from insubordination, indictment, gross misconduct, disrespect to rules etc

Layoff & retrenchment= loss of employment as a result of recession, economic downturn, right sizing/ down sizing, folding up etc.

But in Nigeria context, it seem all are same. Suspension in this environment sometimes translates to sack... Lol

When you are sacked or fired, you have been laid off with no benefits attached, but when you are retrenched you have been relieved of your kid but benefits are attached like having access to pension and grad tuition.

If you are fired or sacked, just remove that work history from your Curriculum Vitae or Resume. But, if you are laid off / retrenched which usually come with you being paid some benefits, you can choose to leave that work experience on your CV especially where first y is relevant to the new role you are seeking. Otherwise, you may not show that you have ever been laid off, retrenched, sacked.or fired

Lay off and retrenchment are involuntary loss of job. While sack and fire means the unexpected, sudden loss of job usually comes with no payoffs, benefits or compensation. ;DLay off and retrenchment are involuntary loss of job. Lay-off and retrenchment go with downsizing of manpower while sack and firing means termination of appointment due to gross misconduct .

I need someone to give a good explanation to these words; Sack, lay-off, retrenchment & fired with their differences.

The words have raised lots of arguments in our office.

Thanks.
the worst is fire or sack ,because this is usually with a bad records, fraud or any other misconduct .The word layoff or retrenchment means ,in a situation the company couldnt continue with u as a result of the economy or privatisation ,which possibly the new management have their own staffs they intend to work with,in such a case based on d company,s plolicy or policies they have to pay beneffits to who ever is concerned ,but in d case of fire or sack there is no entitlement but bad records and this can also affect d person in a new place of endeavor especially if it is fraud.

Re: Differences Between: Sack, Lay-off, Retrenchment And Fire. by Olas16198901: 2:31pm On Apr 29, 2020
Is the same meaning.

Sack- the person has been sacked
Layoff- the person has been layoff (sacked, stopped working with the company again)
Fired- when the boss said you're fired (sacked)
Retrenchment- is not meant sacked, but little would be stop by reshuffling the staffs with their ability or whatever they've, good records. Not certain that 100%of the staff will work back. Some causal companies that are under big company, when the big company wants to retrenched they'll halt some of the causal companies and their staffs would still remains working under other casual company that qualify to stay.

Please check the 'Furlough' for better explanations. And get back please.
XTROVAT:

That's the bottom line bro. grin

I think Sack=Fire and Lay-off=Retrenchment.

For sack/fire, a gross misconduct must have happened on the part of the one who was fired.

For Lay-off/retrenchment, mostly happens when there is the process of downsizing the labour force in an organization. Or letting loose the less productive arm of an organization.

If one is fired, I would be hard to get employment else where, the reason of his lack of employment comes up during an interview process. (Except the fellow wants to shy away from the truth)

While one being layed-off could get another job seamlessly.

Slawormir:
Damnnnnn niggarrr
Let me learn
Fired= gross misconduct or you go against the organisation's rules

Lay off= this one make sense. Them dey tell you say Bros no work for you or rather your area when you for be specialist don finish. Oya dey go house. Bonus money dey follow this one

retrenchment: Bros dey go house but we fit still call you back make you resume work if everything good for us.

Then sack: this one na soft fired. But na the same thing with fired. Probably them don set up a disciplinary committee on top your head to check your gross misconduct before them conclude to tell you good bye

Lol.. Olodo

Sack/fired: you did something wrong against the interests of the organization which is unforgivable,

e.g.
- Fraud
- Continuous disobedience to laid down rules and regulations.
- You bleep your oga wife (for the street guys in the house)
- Dishonest dealings with members of staff and clients.

For those in financial institutions, involvement in fraud comes with prosecution and getting a new job in the same sector will not be possible.

Layoff: this happens when the company feels your area of expertise is no longer required or for a reason like corona virus.

The sacked employee can get another job elsewhere.

RETRENCHMENT:

This could mean that the employee don tay for the organization so teeey age don dey enter or a situation of merger or outright take over by another firm.
