Rearing catfish is good, but its not worth sitting down with if you're not raising up to 5,000 fishes to table size and this involves a lot of capital.
Government and banks should encourage youth who are willing to go into agriculture.

Thats a massive number of fishes. The amount of feed consumed daily or weekly will change as they grow. It will cost abt 15 million naira to feed 50,000 fishes for 6 months. I am assuming you are using earthen ponds for this right?

Thanks for your response. The project is not mine but belongs to a colleague's client. The client is looking at 8 earthen ponds for the 50,000 juveniles.

Please can you break the "N15m for 6 months" down for me to say, how much kg of feeds they will consume weekly/monthly at Month 1, Month 2, etc and the associated monthly costs (kg times cost per unit) to enable prepare a reasonable cashflow projection.

Budget between 250-300 per fish for the next 6 month.

CONGRATULATIONS....I use to be in this fish bizz until the fat bottomed Lagos women fish sellers cartel prized me out as if to say I stole the fishes not even minding the exorbitant fish feeds. Good luck to you as this PMB Govt regime might provide the right environment for the bizz to thrive.

Oga belexy, how much do they buy millange now? How much does it cost to raise them to millange level? And is the sales of millange still good?

Melange is between N370 to N400 per kilo now. It all depends on your bargaining power and your location. It will cost you about N150 per fish to raise to melange level at 3months; could be way less than this if you get a good breed of fish and if your farm practices are on point. Yes, melange farming is good but try to rear a lot at once. Your profit comes from the turnover rate.

It can cost between N10 to 15. It all depends on the seller. In Lagos, its usually N10 though.
A 12ft × 8ft × 3ft depth pond will comfortably take about 350 fishes.

I'm sorry, i cant really say how much they will consume daily, weekly or monthly. Maybe others can help. I usually feed my fishes to satiation at each meal and I have never used the feeding per body weight method to feed my fishes which would have enabled me to answer your question. In my own case, the feed quantity varies depending on the water quality at the time of feeding, time of the day and batch of fish stocked. But you will need about 60 tonnes of feed to feed the number of fishes you are talking about.

Even with your Pond's style, u can still be creative (forget about Lagos State, that is what they know), You can create a kind of artificial demarcation in your pond and allowing 2 water outlets for both sides, u try to lure/persuade your natures to one side while u clean and flush d other with a foam (having a long pole attached to it) dat can clean, mop and drain the dirty water. Change their position to the other side and apply the same method. If you follow these steps cautiously, you will be willing to meet me one on one. Best of luck! wink

What is the average consumption like daily/weekly/monthly? What other costs should be factored in for a project of this size? I want to work on a cashflow projection for a proposed fish farm and your input would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

If you can produce food for them, then 300k will do. Also you need to have well or borehole so as not to be buying water

You don't kick off fishing with such number.
You start with lower numbers maybe 200 to 500

Bro, did you check the number of fishes he spoke about? 300K cannot even feed 5000 fishes, not to talk of 50,000 fishes.

You don't kick off fishing with such a large number of fishes.

I get your point. I also dont encourage newbies to start wt a lot of fishes as 'backyard' farmers. Especially those who have only heard the good side of fish farming on the internet and who now decide to invest all their life savings into setting it up because they dream of the so-called 'millions' they will reap. But this person is doing it on an industrial scale. Not backyard farming and not 'experimenting' . I also want to presume that he has certified trusted consultants on site and farm managers handling the project and the info he is getting from nairaland is just to compare notes and for his own personal knowledge and not the info he wants to use to start it on his own. In addition to that, i believe that his consultants have given him the pros and cons of the business and he has chosen to forge ahead.
