The Shambolic State Of Secondary Education In Nigeria by breakingbad(m): 11:42pm On Aug 07, 2015 |
Fellow Nigerians have you observed that Education is in a very sharp decline in our country? Visit a regular secondary school in your neighborhood and you will observe that our education is in shambles. I am neither a brainiac nor an Albert Einstein but I can proudly say in my time education was in a far better shape. In our time many students wrote WAEC and JAMB without assistance and still had reasonable results but today "Miracle Centre" is the order of the day. Secondary School Students of today jumble tenses, spell woefully and show just little traces of intelligence. One would think that in this computerized world, with even toddlers having access to browsing phones, information at our fingertips and access to google, wikipedia and tonnes of educational materials, there would be an increase in the intellect but sadly, reverse is the case. Social media such as 2go, whatsapp etc have even worsened the basic spell-ability of our youth. You don't need to go far, check out comments of fellow nairalanders and you'll get a glimpse of this anomaly. Is it that aridity is now our societal norm? God forbid. The question is who is to blame? 1. Society: The Nigerian Society emphasizes more on paper qualification (Machiavellian end-justifies-means) than ability necessitating parents to enrol their children in Miracle centres. Educational competition prize money can be as "high" as 100,000 while Big Brother Africa can earn you N10,000,000. Please where is the encouragement? 2. Parents: Parents have little to no interest in their children academic performance. Some even force the school to "jump classes" for their children to finish quickly 3. Schools: I believe our schools (esp private schools) carry a very large chunk of the blame as they directly/indirectly condoned student's indolence, indiscipline and lackadaisical attitude to studies. Have any of you heard of any students repeat of late? Repeating classes is now "old school" 4. Exam bodies: Exam bodies are co-conspirators in this crime. They not only turn a blind eye on malpractices, they reduce their standard. Checkout WAEC questions of today, very cheap. I faintly remember once when Jamb cut off mark for medical students was 270 but now.... 5. Teachers: Let's face it even the teachers of today are not as intellectual as the teachers of old. Many teachers today are just teaching to pass time till they get better jobs. Some are quite intelligent but are not trained to impart knowledge. 6. Students: I believe most students do not know the enormity of their actions YET else they would sit up but I think society at large is to blame because we are products of the society we live in. Please nairalanders what do you think should be done to curb this unfortunate condition of our educational system in Nigeria? 32 Likes 3 Shares |

Many Secondary School students join cults and get themselves involved in all kind of vices, forgetting that they are ruining their own lives. God help us. 3 Likes |

this is a very serious problem we are facing in term of education.
if we are to change the face of education for good all hands must be on deck.
from government to the parents and the stakeholders in education.

Teachers: No! I think the teachers should take less the blame because flogging has been abolished in secondary schools and that is the only tool a teacher can use to discipline his students. Parents: Yes! Why? Because the tend to defend their children at all times even when they know that their child is recalcitrant and obstinate. Also support illegal ways of manoeuvreing their wards way through. Society: Largely! Reason is not far fetched. Everyone seems to condemn in all ramifications punishment of any sort by the teachers. Government: Largely! Low pay and bad working conditions. If a teacher gets assaulted by the student, there is supposed to be a law protecting the teacher and punishing the student. Students: Partly! They are in the society as such take everything the way society presented it to them. Social Networks: Not at all. 7 Likes 1 Share |

Everything Jaga Jaga......... I will like to blame our political class. do u know that state governors now encourage exam malpractices because they don't want opposition to blame them for mass failures of student during their regime. Meanwhile, u won't see them boosting intellectual capacity of the teachers. |

I take exception to number 5, few are born to teach, other learn the ropes of teaching and a handful have passion for it. Yes, many teach to pass time but in the process find fulfilment in teaching, some use it as a stepping stone to reach there destination. My Aunt, left a very lucrative job for a teaching job because she did not find fulfilment in the job. When asked about her action, she said, "I find fulfilment in moulding young mind, it was what I was born to do". We have many teachers that can't spell properly, based on a research I did those that take their time to read and write proper english without spelling errors are either 45 yrs and above and those that use abbreviations are of the new school, the WhatsApp age. A proprietor complained on a thread for teachers about an applicants inability to spell properly and he decide to inquire about his performance from his students, they advice the teacher should teach Kindergarten. My Dad taught before he reached the zentih of his career, my Mum is a teacher, My Uncle taught before he left the field and I also taught. My mum was the only trained teacher among us. Examination Malpractice is the order of the day, miracle centers is no news to teenagers, assisting student in WAEC/GCE is stale news and this is because hard work is no longer in vogue......lies!!!!!!! My ex-girlfriend went all the way to Osun for miracle center, even when I warned against it, her actions and the after effect. My close friend went through miracle center to make his O'level papers but today find it difficult to graduate since 2012. I repeated Primary 3,5 and S.S.2. I wrote Jamb four times, but that did not deter me in achieveing my dreams. It is odd for student to repeat classes in this 21st century. The family is to be blamed, charity begins at home. A family where they think it is OK to cut corner, cheat and lie is not a problem, the child see it as a norm. Why would you tell your child to tell the visitor you are not around whereas you are in the room? Most parent do not want to hear or see their child/ward fail(ed) a particular subject, they assume the school is incompetent forgetting that they also have a role to play in assisting in assignments. Yes, we have teacher that are not even trained, some do not have the qualifications, a few have been teaching without even trying to be certified by any relevant awarding body or institution, even the graduates in the noble profession do not take the job serious and so they give less than their best. The government have failed in it responsibility hence the need for many mushrooms schools. #my opinion. 9 Likes 1 Share |

The 36 state governors who are constitutionally responsible for secondary education need to be castrated all of them. Special treatment should be reserved for ex-Kano governor Kwakwanso who built $1 billion school in Niger Republic while almajiris continue to roam the streets of his state. Another candidate for special punishment is Fashola who is a smooth operator cum talker but EMPTY in delivery to the people. www.nairaland.com/attachments/1874841_img2014111800178_jpeg3fee82da796bf21cfe45923e7b82ec12 www.nairaland.com/attachments/1874883_img2014111800146_jpeg1b27de443b457a0f860e5adcdaaa187b www.nairaland.com/attachments/1874906_img2014111800148_jpeg2ae8db776b2363f8010f35b0463c6cbb www.nairaland.com/attachments/1875047_img2014111800173_jpeg9b1c3e1b830058e00636bea988489243 www.nairaland.com/attachments/1875011_img2014111800152_jpeg6cc44980e82a1aa277261f905cff2476 More pathetic pictures from this thread: https://www.nairaland.com/2003828/unbelievable-pictures-awori-college-ojo If I am not mistaken the Eko Project is the $90 million loan from the World Bank that Fashola did not want to disclose how it was spent because "FoI does not apply to Lagos state" 4 Likes 2 Shares |
