I've come to realise there's no such thing as conventional cooking methods, as people cook differently.
I'm used to cooking white yam by just adding salt but i went to a friend's house and found out that they use sugar to cook yam(which is weird).

What do u guys think, is there a conventional way of cooking?

Yes using sugar to cook yam is not a new thing!
