Shooting Stars Sports Club beat Heartland 3-1 on Monday in Owerri to record their first away win in the top flight league since 2005. The last time the Ibadan warlords won away from their base was a 2005 win over Gateway in Abeokuta before they later dropped off the top division.

And after the game in Owerri, Shooting Stars coach Gbenga Ogunbote also noted that they did not approach the Heartland game with the aim of avenging his side’s first round 2-1 loss. The Ibadan-based team simply desired a win to boost their chances of finishing well at the end of the season.

When 3SC lost to Heartland in week two in Ibadan, Franklin Howard was in charge of the Oluyole Warriors.

On Monday morning, Heartland were stunned 3-1 by their visitors, Shooting Stars, in a rescheduled Premier League fixture. The match began on Sunday but after 26 minutes, it was called off because of heavy rain as both teams failed to register a lead.

But despite the huge result by 3SC in the week’s star match, Ogunbote, who spoke to our correspondent on the telephone through the club’s media officer, Jubril Arowolo, after the match, played down the significance of the win, saying that revenge was not on his mind. He however said the win would trigger 3SC’s aspiration of finishing among the best in the league.

“We did not set out to avenge the first round defeat in Ibadan. We just wanted play and to improve on our performance so the victory was a reward for hard work. We can still do better and hopefully, this result will make us believe that we can be among the best in the league,” he said.

The match, which restarted 10 am on Monday, had 3SC taking the lead through Tope Orelope in the 39th minute of play.

Heartland fought back quickly and got an equaliser at the closing stage of the first half through Fortune Ogbonivbare. The relief did not last as 3SC added a second goal two minutes into the second half through a header from Cletus Itodo off Yinka Adedeji’s free kick. Just as Heartland sought to come back into the game, the visitors added the third goal in the 52nd minutes. Ajani Ibrahim fired a shot at Heartland goalkeeper Iwu Emmanuel who spilled the effort for Nojeem Olukokun to score.

It was his fourth goal of the season just like Orelope too. With the result, 3SC are now in the 9th position with 32 points from 22 games while Heartland, who would have climbed to the fourth position with a win over their visitors, remain in the 8th position with 34 points from 22 matches.

Commenting on the atmosphere and the attitude of the home fans towards the result, Arowolo praised the referee and the home fans.

“I commend the referee and the friendly attitude of the home fans. I also commend their maturity,” said Arowolo.
