Former FIFA President Joao Havelange has died aged 100. Havelenge was the President of the world football’s governing body (FIFA) from 1974 to 1998 before Sepp Blatter replaced him. He passed away in Samaritano Hospital in Rio de Janiero after been in and out of the hospital due to respiratory problems. He was an Olympic swimmer and water polo player for his country Brazil before becoming the first non-European to head the International Football Federation (FIFA) in 1974. During his tenure, FIFA was transformed and saw rise of its flagship event, the World Cup into a multi-billion dollar venture. On leaving the office of President he was made a honorary President but Havelenge resigned as the honourary President due to corruption allegations levied against him and others in 2013. Joao Havelenge who was a Lawyer and businessman also served as a member of the International Olympic Committee between 1963 and 2011. The Engenhao stadium in Rio de Janeiro is named in his honour. http://m.bbc.com/sport/football/37097423 3 Likes 1 Share

Sir Stanley Rous was the president of FIFA and he was seeking re-election in 1974. He was an englishman. Rous' challenger was Jao Havelange of Brazil. No non-European had served as president of FIFA, so Rous was quite confident that he would be re-elected, especially since he had the complete backing of Uefa. However, Rous had seriously angered africans and asians. 1) Africa and Asia had only one slot at the World Cup and the winner of the african qualification series had to play the winner of the asian series to determine who would go to the World Cup. 2) Sir Stanley was also a supporter of South African football and he repeatedly resisted attempts to ban South Africa from world football. When the south africans were eventually banned he overturned the ban a few years later, until more african and asian countries joined FIFA and finally voted for a ban. He also tried to overturn CAF's ban on South African football by threatening to create a southern african football confederation. Jao Havelange met with Yidnekachew Tessema (CAF president) who told him that africans did not want South Africa to be readmitted to world football and that Africa must have its own slot at the World Cup. Havelange agreed to Tessema's demands. Havelange also campaigned in Asia and he had the support of the South American Confederation (his home confederation). Stanley Rous did not bother to campaign in Africa and Asia. Eventually the africans, asians and south americans voted out Rouse and Havelange became FIFA president. Africa eventually had five slots at the World Cup before he left office. I remember the rousing reception that he got at the National Stadium Surulere when he came to Nigeria in the mid 1990s. May his soul rest in peace. 5 Likes |
