I share your sentiments....however the reason why he was so young...

1.In January and July 1966....the Nigerian Army lost a lot of its senior officer ranks to the coups. Both Northern and Southern. As a result...a lot of young officers got promoted.

In my opinion, if there had been no coups....people like Gowon would have been promoted to general in the 1980's...and retired by say 1989.Same for Buhari.(And we would still have been a parliamentary democracy).

2.Many of these Nigerians were often members of the first educated generation....ie educated beyond secondary school. And in addition, we had to mantain federal character. Hence the appointments of young people. Now.....we have generations of educated people.

If you are referring to military DICTATORS only, you should be smart enough to realise that they came in by way of coup-plotting, not so?

Gowon was less than 32 when he became head of state.

But today, a 32-year old in Nigeria is still battling it out with Jamb. No future,no hope.
