Innunique: Funny enough I am unable to activate the defender, I have tried modifying the registry through an online procedure, but it keeps telling me access denied. I can't even find gpedit.MSc or any group policy editor equivalents on my pc. What I saw online was that probably my version of Windows 8 doesn't give methe privilege of editing group policy , so I can't activate windows defender. Any help? Since u are an expert. |

Use Windows Defender which comes installed with Windows 8.1. However, you have to uninstall any third-party anti-virus software. I've used defender for years free and never had any problems. Just make sure to keep it up-to-date. |

Talking about windows I am running a windows 10 and it is the best windows so far with beautiful features...... I just Migrated to 10 from 8.1.................................here are some screen grabs from my Windows 10..... Sorry I deviated, You dont need an Anti virus when using a windows 8.1 or 10 , your windows defender is way way better than most free versions of Anti-Virus we make use of........ But if you must use any Antivirus, the likes of E-set, E-scan, Mac-afee and Bit defender are good and quite affordable......... not " CHEAP THINGS NO GOOD and GOOD THINGS NO CHEAP ''

I use Microsoft Essential and now defender for my Windows 10. But if you are using Defender, also Use USB Guard and don't click anything you see. Celebrating 5 years of pc usage without a single virus attack. Mind you, my system is on at least 12 hours and at least 6 hours of Internet every day |

Windowa 8 and above is very secure. I dont use Anti virus, I even disabled windows defender. Each time my systems are trying to slow down, I simply refresh windows installation and re-install my essential softwares. Anti Virus itself turns into a Virus with time. Attacking your systems files and destroying good softwares installed. Don't know if I am entirely right with this, during the days on windows 98 and family, Anti.Virus never stopped curbed viruses. There was always a.kind of virus to crash your system even if you use an antivirus from Mars. |

johnshagb: Maintenance culture is what matters. I have use my laptop and 150gb external hard drive for 5years now. I have not have issues with virus. That know the site you visit, what you download, what you install. Stay away from porn sites, quick fix malware or virus removal softwares. Use original or widely accepted softwares. Update your antivirus frequently. Set your own rules |

I advice using Windows 10 as 8.1 is less user friendly and old. If you have 8.1 you get a free license upgrade to windows 10 for limited time. Windows 10 has the start menu and a better look You can use defender and security essentials (for free) to protect against viruses and spyware. you do not need any 3rd party AV if you have both on windows 10. |

Thanks for calling me to this thread MuhdG. I have been reading through some of these responses and wanted to say that whilst Windows 8.X and beyond are definitely more secure than previous iterations of Windows, you are never 100% safe. This is not a scare or intimidation tactic that I'm trying to use to worry you all. But in the realm of cybersecurity, there are always exploits and vulnerabilities (this is why Microsoft often applies security patches and updates for their Operating System(s)). If you are well-versed at applying firewall rules (using IP addresses and port numbers), I advise that you scan your network traffic with a Network Analysation tool such as WireShark to check for traffic that probably shouldn't be on your Network. Always have a baseline scan to refer to if you feel that you have found suspicious traffic on your network (I know this may sound a bit over the top for the non-techies out there and it is). My advice if you are not super well-versed in computing is place a tape over your webcam (unless if you are going to use it). Whilst Windows defender has improved over the years, it's far from perfect as it's not the best anti-malware programme out there for countering zero-day exploits. My personal choice for that is stuff from Kaspersky labs. If you are versed at Systems engineering, use tools like Nmap to scan for open ports that you don't believe should be open on your network. Some of the devices in your household could probably use extra hardening. As someone who is very much into Cybersecurity, I advise that you all try to keep up to date as to what is going on in the Cyber realm. Here is a good website: https://securelist.com/ Remain safe and we will continue to see you on the web. |

pcguru1: You need anti-virus for any OS.....Every OS is susceptible to malware. Windows is just more prone to it because 99% of the world uses Windows computers. Thus, most Malware is developed for Windows. People with malicious mindsets usually want to target the largest amount of people they can infect in order to steal their private information. You are never too safe in the computing world. |
