Is the earth 4.5 billion years old, as claimed by the scientists?

Modern geologists and geophysicists consider the age of the Earth to be around 4.54 billion years.This age has been determined by radiometric age dating of meteorite material and is consistent with the ages of the oldest-known terrestrial and lunar samples.
Today's accepted age of Earth of 4.55 billion years was determined by C.C. Patterson using uranium-lead isotope dating (specifically lead-lead dating) on several meteorites including the Canyon Diablo meteorite and published in 1956.

Or is it just over 6000 years old as claimed by the Christian bishop James Ussher in 1654?

Bishop Ussher's history of the Earth.
Ussher's chronology provides the following dates for key events in the Biblical history of the world:

* 4004 BC - Creation
* 2348 BC - Noah's Flood
* 1921 BC - God's call to Abraham
* 1491 BC - The Exodus from Egypt
* 1012 BC - Founding of the Temple in Jerusalem
* 586 BC - Destruction of Jerusalem by Babylon and the beginning of the Babylonian Captivity
* 4 BC - Birth of Jesus

The world: Born in 4004 BC. Ushers 'theory'? or fact?

Whilst scientist use too many assumptions one of which may make their submissions fundermentally faulty, the estimated age of the earth deduced from bible occurences too can not possibly be right as there is ample evidence that the earth is much older than 6,000 years. My submission is no one really knows and i don't think we need to bother our selves about it.

How Young Is the Earth? Applying Simple Math to Data Provided in Genesis
by James J. S. Johnson, J.D.*

When Abraham was born, how old (or young) was the earth? Can we know the answer with confidence? Yes, if God has given us the information we need in Genesis. And He has. But to recognize it requires reading, writing, and 'rithmetic--and one more critical ingredient: avoiding the irrelevant issue of whether Genesis genealogies are "open" or "closed."

Read that last sentence again; it is the key to avoiding confusion. Some people assume that the historical events related in the early chapters of Genesis cannot be precisely dated because we cannot be certain whether the genealogical lists are complete ("closed"wink or whether they skip generations and have gaps (and are thus "open"wink. The issue is irrelevant because the timeframes given in Genesis are measured by the number of years between one event and another event, regardless of how many generations occurred between those "bookend" events.

While the age of earth is irrelevant to normal day to day discussions and transactions, certain jobs require an idea about the age of the earth to function effectively. In the oil industry for example, a rough estimate of the age of sediments is needed in determining locations of oil pools for exploitation. It is therefore necessary to have a timeframe in mind when doing the prospecting.

@mantraa

At this point in our history and knowledge, it would be acceptable to use the geological time scale as an approriate tool in measuring the earth's age until it is scientifically proven to be a lot younger (i.e. better methods of dating rocks that would reveal the oldest rocks are actually less than 10,000 years old). Believing the earth is less than 10,000 years old is another kettle of fish as people are entitled to their beliefs but I do not think people who use the age of the earth/universe to do any serious scientific work would use a relative 'young' age of the earth as a benchmark for their works.

the earth age is not as important as how the problem in it could be solved right now to make it a best place to live like the beginning bt now know that life has began b4 moses wrote it and again what is called earth is d dry land but already water has been for long time and out of it appear land so the age of water could reflect in age of land since it evolves from water.the other side is that if one day with the lord a thousand year 2pet3:8 then 6days works could be 6000yrs and so the age of the dry land called earth may not be well understood.
