As part of efforts to boost economic and trade relations between the two countries, President Boni Yayi of Republic of Benin has offered to build a Railway line all the way from Cotonou to Madakali, a border town with Kebbi State in Nigeria to boost economic relations. A statement issued on Tuesday, August 18, in Birnin Kebbi, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Atiku Bagudu, Abubakar Muazu Dakingari, after the governors recent official visit to Benin Republic, following the directives by President Muhammadu Buhari to represent him, quoted President Yayi saying that, a similar railway to connect neighbouring countries of Niger Republic , Burkina Faso and Togo would also be constructed, in addition to that proposal to link Benin Republic with Kebbi State. “President Yayi also proposed a flight-links between Cotonou Airport and Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport, Birnin Kebbi. He suggested the development of hydropower electricity plants on either side that can serve the two communities using the water resources on their common border,” the statement read. The President also believed that the relations with Nigeria , considering the strategic position of Nigerian businessmen, especially Kano traders in international business would serve as Benin Republic window to the world. While conducting the governor and his delegation round the sea-port of Cotonou, Yayi also stated that, Benin Republic will assist Nigeria most especialy Kebbi State in its strive for economic excellence.
