THE Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agri­
culture and Rural Development, Mr. Sunny Echono,
yesterday stated that international and local investors have committed to making investments of about US$4 billion in the nation’s agricultural sector.
Echono, who was represented by Director Special
Duties, Mrs Ademola Abiri, stated this in Abuja on
the occasion of the validation workshop on the new
alliance report said, key development partners such
as the EU, UK, Japan, France, Germany, and the US
also committed to funding equivalent of about US$
500 million for Nigeria’s agricultural sector between
2013 and 2016.
According to him, in Nigeria’s new alliance agree­
ment, the government is committed to 13 major
policy actions in the areas of seed and fertilizer, Bank of Agriculture, agricultural insurance, nutritions, land tilting, staple crops processing zones, commodity exchange, enterprise registration and power availability.
“The Nigerian government made policy reform
commitment while the private sector made commit­
ments on the level of agricultural investments in the
medium term. Development partners on their part
committed to funding levels for the medium term.
The civil society is to ensure that the commitments
reflect the views of the intended beneficiaries.”
