Fear Grips Nlng Over Protest Letter By Rivers Youths Over Drydock by OboloMAN: 6:31pm On Aug 31, 2015
Fear is said to have gripped management of
multinational gas corporation, Nigeria Liquefied
Natural Gas Company, NLNG and her investors
over a strongly worded protest letter presented by
Rivers state youths and stakeholders over
proposed location of its Dry dock.

The letter which content made startling revelations previously unheard of lay overwhelming credence to the fact that NLNG in spite of its sustained denial was actually sponsor of the proposed drydock project in Badagry.

In a nine page letter articulately written and
copied to government and strategic agencies in
the country by Youth leaders representing various
youth groups in Rivers state, stakeholders and
other youths of Niger delta under the aegis of
Joint Niger Delta Youth Movement who were led
by Niger delta activist, Ann Kio Briggs they were
resolute over their demand..

Others who registered their presence in the civil
protest to NLNG complex in Port Harcourt
include; Chairman, National Youth Council of
Nigeria, NYCN, Rivers state chapter, Amb. Sukubo
Sara-Igbe Sukubo, National Secretary General of
Ijaw Youth Council and Leader of Rivers Ijaw
Youths, Engr Emmanuel Bristol Alagbariya, Leader
Bonny Youth Federation, Barr. Simeon Wilcox
among others to express serious disappointment
and regret in the non inclusion of host
communities who are critical stakeholders of
NLNG projects, condemning in the process
perceived high level deceit, fabrications and
deliberate intention to foist crisis in the region.

Part of the demands during the protest is to have
the Dry dock located in any of the Niger delta
states for the purpose of creating job
opportunities for the teeming unemployed youths,
they also demanded that NLNG should organize a
road show in the Niger delta and assure the
investors that they will patronize the investors
and make available all their vessels to the dry
dock facility to be built in the Niger delta. The
letter submitted amidst tight security by NLNG
neither deterred the youths who matched on
within the NLNG premises to deliver the strongly
worded letter received by one of NLNG’s key
management officers.

Some contentious issues were raised in the letter
which reads in parts: “It is not in dispute that you
NLNG conceived the idea and sponsored the
disputed Dry dock feasibility studies, received,
accepted, gave approval to the report and indeed
mobilized banks and investors and also organized
a road show to actualize and give effect to your
desired decision to site the dry dock in Lagos as
pre determined”.

“It is necessary here to note that before the
feasibility study and road show of Decenber 9th
2014, organized by you there were no foreign or
local investors (company or consortium) for the
Dry dock, but to our chagrin NLNG had already
named the project, Badagry Ship Repair and
Marine Engineering, BSME”.

To further give credence to NLNG’s pre
determined and lopsided feasibility study, the
statement gave references to various reports
including one made available by news giant
Reuters on Friday June 19th 2015 which was also
hoisted on NLNG website captioned ‘NLNG EYES
$1.5 BILLION NAIRA DEBUT SHIPYARD IN
NIGERIA’. The first paragraph aptly captured that
‘Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Company (NLNG)
is sponsoring the construction of the first major
ship yard in Africa’s biggest economy at the cost
of $1.5 billion, in its attempt to turn the country
into a hub for maritime operations on the
continent”. Reuters went further to quote NLNG
spokesman, Tony Okonedo corroborating
statements that indicate that they are actually
sponsoring the dry dock project.

The letter in part countered strongly and referred
to as unsubstantiated,. NLNG spokesman’s claim
that technical grounds like, Natural water depth;
Proximity to an international airport and Proximity
to an active offshore and onshore West Africa oil
and gas hub were practicable parameters used to
decide on siting the Dry dock in Badagry
Countering the claims the Joint Niger Delta Youth
Movement stated in its letter that it is yet to
come to terms on why Badagry which natural
water depth of 11-12 meters was chosen ahead
of Bonny island with natural water depth of 14.30
meters and the Onne/Ikpokiri which has about
15.2 meters of natural water depth.
On proximity to airport, it states that the distance
between Lagos International airport and Badagry
is about 68 kilometers while from Port Harcourt
international airport to Onne port is about 40
kilometers, even as Bonny Island has the
advantage of a mini air strip.

Dissecting the issue of proximity to an active
offshore and onshore West Africa oil and gas hub,
it states “Niger delta is the most active offshore
and onshore oil and gas hub in Nigeria and
indeed in the whole of West Africa. Hear this: It is
a global established known and accepted
empirical fact that only the management of NLNG
Bonny and its hired agents the Royal Haskoning
DHV are disputing this very obvious fact”.
The protest organized in the most civil and
intellectual manner attracted the admiration of
security operatives. There was staked consensus
among, Ann Kio Briggs, Sukubo Sara Igbe, Bristol
Alagbariya and Wilcox and others that NLNG’s
hidden but now open agenda can never be
allowed to see the light of the day, they assert
that the decision will if allowed to fly will be
detrimental not just to the present generation of
youths in the Niger delta, but to those yet unborn.

While they wait on NLNG to reply the letter they
are strongly maintaining a capital NO stance to
siting the Drydock in Badagry.

But the decision to site it in badagry was after detailed feasibility study and EIA, all I see is selfish youths sent by some individuals looking after their own pockets...

I like the protocol that the Niger delta activists have adopted beginning their agitation with an IMPASSIONED REASONABLE NON-THREATENING FACTUAL AND INTELLECTUAL manner.

The world needs to see that this is our first recourse in pursuing this matter .
The south west with its now arrogant control of most of the news outlets and multi media platforms would have loved the struggle to begin right out of the gate with violence then they would spin the story to all the world to support their long running narrative that multinational investments of any kind is only logical safe and guaranteed in the south west.

I can almost guarantee now that the next card they will play is to spin up disagreements between the different subgroups within the Niger Delta as to who gets what then spinning the story that internal struggles within various groups within the NG makes the entire location nonviable for investments.

Any South South or South East person who does not see the entrenched INSTITUTIONAL DUPLICITY of the south west by now is much more of a bigger fool than our parents were and you know i wouldn't call the old folks fools so much as i would call them extremely naive which coming right after the civil war might seem understandable.

I will spell it out in RED so there is no mistake about my meaning:
THE SOUTHWEST IS DOING AND HAS BEEN DOING FOR DECADES WHAT THE NORTH HAS BEEN/AND IS DOING IN POLITICS:APPROPRIATE TO THEMSELVES EVERY OR ALMOST EVERY PLAN/OPPORTUNITY FOR INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT AND INVESTMENT WHERE ITS POSSIBLE.

They (south west) have learned to use the media as a tool/weapon effectively so watch as they will seek to discredit the arguments presented by the agitators and where they cant logically defeat the case made by the agitators (a most likely scenario), they will do two things:

[1]Kill and bury any and every story of the issues raised and seek to bar it from the realm of National discourse and where that approach fails

[2]The media sections controlled by the southwest will massively turn their attention to the South South and to a lesser extent , the South East :every gunshot , every death , every confrontation between the security agencies and whoever , will be reported in great detail a pipeline will not burst without it being in the news circle for at least a week.Strategically and psychologically, the image they will try to evoke is of a region in chaos or precariously close to it.Not the place any right thinking business big or small local or international would want to invest in, regardless of the resource base or the advantages it has.

Omolaubis will put their money where ever they like.
Instead they should go to Jonathan's house to protest .
Where is the Olokola and Brass LNG conceived by obasanjo and was already in the execution phase by the time Jonathan took over ?

Yes they will as is their right but the government of Nigeria is warned that if one Naira (i should say Dollar) of Nigeria's money is invested by the NLNG (that earns NEARLY ALL[80%] of its revenue from the South South) in that project in Badagry, there will be hell to pay simple.

Yoruba people still want to cheat us the way they cheated our forefathers when they stole our Royal Niger company and changed it to UAC that developed Lagos and employed only them.. Now they want to use LNG to build another company in Lagos to develop Lagos while Rivers people suffer and die of the LNG waste products and remain jobless. And after they ll they claim Lagos to be their own.

Nigeria LNG Limited has denied its involvement in the proposed USD 1.5 billion Badagry Dry Dock Project after several media reports identified the company as the owner of the project.
Nigeria LNG said that the company is not the owner and is not investing in the building of any dry dock anywhere in the world, as it has a singular business focus, namely processing and exporting LNG.

The owner of the proposed dry dock in Badagry, Lagos State, Nigeria, is a consortium of other Nigerian companies under the name of Badagry Ship Repair and Maritime Engineering Company (BSMEC), according to Nigeria LNG.

"NLNG's only interest was and still remains, encouraging investors to consider building dry docks in the country to save the nation's foreign exchange and save local ship owners, like ourselves, the trouble of having to go overseas for dry dock services,'' the company said in a statement.

''Nigeria LNG would thus be pleased to see more dry dock projects emerge in different parts of the country, but will not be investing in any. It is thus fair to add that not being an investor in dry dock, NLNG cannot dictate to investors where to site their projects.''

Badagry Dry Dock will be the first facility of this kind able to receive large vessels in the region of West Africa. Currently, owners of large vessels in the region have to dry dock their vessels in Europe, Asia and North America.

Much ado over nothing. Even if feasibility studies did not present Badagry as the preferred site, nobody can dictate to a private company where they should locate their private investment. The NLNG has made clear it's role in the process which is to encourage investors to build the dry-docks, and not in anyway to sink a penny in the project itself.

Instead of all this wrangling, the youths should advocate for a safer ND which would naturally attract FDI. I would not be surprised if most of the reasons the feasibility reports favored Badagry bordered on security, especially with the kidnapping occurrences and 'settlements' demanded in the ND.

One wonders why the ND leaders like GEJ were not tasked with building such projects in their time, and the likes of Dokubo are still waddling about after siting his own institution, King Amachree African University in Benin Republic instead of in the Niger Delta.
