It might be possible..if he has enough research work and publications( let's not dwell much on d naija connection factor that mayb aided him to) to qualify him for such positions. The truth is that many senior lecturers deserve to b prof shortly after their phd but itz jes wtickedness of d system that denies them,so let's not take the abnormality in our university system as d norm.. he might hav deserved it,u neva can tell....also if most or all of d senior lecturers are on sabbatical, or holding other positions within d skul,it could be possible for him to b HOD..once in my skul, A prof was on sabbatical, another was d DVC,another prof of my dept was d dean, while 2 senior lecturers were out of d country for post doc, it was a young PhD holder (lecturer 2) (less than a year he bagged d phd) that was acting as d HOD.. You said acting HOD abi??

Thanks for understanding my position! I'm also in the academia, and have some understanding of this.

Bros.... Forget, think of his observations, a year isn't enough to get you a HOD position.... In the academic field,a year isn't just enough... I don't think the guy is hating.... Gracias a dios!

From what I read, he was never in Nigeria since 2001 until 2007. The system in this country is "get at least a foreign degree and see the door of professorship opening for you to enter". Me na John Hopkins, Imperial Col or Edinburgh I go do PhD. Make haters no vex wen I bcom d VC of UNN at 35yrs ooooooo.

people like u assume u can read yet u dont. The article only jentioned dats wen he got his certificates. how long does it take to get a masters ow long does it take to get a phd abroad?

INTERNATEpirate has pressed the tail of a COBRA.well, his observation might also serve as a comliment and not critics.Actually he may be right or rather he's right.because you can't see that elsewhere exept in foreing countries too cos we've got saddist that will not allow the progress of others even when that person is fully deserving of it.that is a sign of honesty, sincerity frm them that shows they recognise and reward good work unlike other places.

I'm not talking of the professorship...I was concerned about the HOD role.

Timoleon:

my brother its not too short...in more developed countries people get professorships in shorter periods, in the southwest, its victimisation and politics that ensures you hav grey hair b4 u get professorship.

Dude, the man is 41 years old, how old do you want him to be? undecided

FYI, the average graduating age of a PhD in the US and UK is 33.

Is hod an academic position or an administrative one?
In most Nigerian universities it is usually rotated among PhD holding lecturers in the department. Some even turn down the chance because the administrative work load is too much.
That is when they remember that they will be away for the next 9 months on sabbatical.

This mentality depicted in your comment is satanic.
So if the guy meets the laid down academic requirements, he should be barred on account of his age?

Sir your method of reasoning is backward. People should be promoted base on competence not number of years of experience. How many a times have we seen young lecturers far better than old ones.

Do not mistake competence with ability. Competence is measured by one work antecedent why ability is measured by one qualification

Yes oh only in the north. In fact they are waiting for him to finish his phd so that they will make him HOD. Come to uniport and try that. My project supervisor who got his phd in 2007 with over 28 scholarly articles and journal both in Nigeria and international is still not a senior lecturer in UNIPORT. Can this young Professor boost of 20 scholarly articles and journals Only in the north....... In UNIPORT you most be a senior lecturer before you dream of professorship when you most have gotten the requirements for professorship.
thats why GEJ got his phd their without any traceable thesis. except the theory of Goat and Yam on Close Proximity. useless people. keep hating while North is progressing.

Actually it happens. If the senior lecturers (professors and associates) of the department are on sabbatical leave.
He will be given the 'Acting HOD' status instead of a regular HOD
A Lecturer or a Senior Lecture with PhD can be a HoD even when there are professors and readers in the department.

You don't have to wait for years to become a head of department. I am also in the system and I can tell you the honour is well deserved. The most senior person can assume d position if there is no alternative.

It is in Nigeria we hype about degrees. In Europe and the US, there are professors without PhD. When is considered over there is one's contribution (research) to the body of knowledge. An Msc holder with over 60 works in local and international journals has contributed more to the body of knowledge than a PhD holder with just 30 works.
