I think the man acted dumbly. After the statement by the alhaji, he should have asked him to provide the proof that he got the money from the mentioned bank.

Where he failed to provide any doc to substantiate his claim then, he should have gotten him arrested. By this, there will be a formal investigation into the matter and the truth would be established and his money returned.
