Nigeria: South-East Governors, Assembly Members Under Pressure to Declare Asset.

South-East Governors and members of the National Assembly are now under pressure to declare their assets publicly in line with the example set by President Muhamadu Buhari and Vice President, Yemi Osibanjo.

In a press statement on Wednesday, a civil rights organisation, the Civil Rights Realization and Advancement Network (CRRAN), urged Governors of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo and National Assembly members from the zone to declare their assets publicly.

According to the statement forwarded to journalists by the President of CRRAN, Olu Omotayo, the South-East Governors and National Assembly members should declare their assets publicly in order to check corruption and ensure that the people in the zone enjoy democracy dividends.

Omotayo noted that in order for the citizens of South-East to enjoy the dividends of democracy, they should break away from cocoon of deception leaders from the zone have continually used to deceive them.

"The president has publicly declare his assets, whether it's' the true worth of his assets or not, the most important thing is that he has made a declaration. The declaration will assist Nigerians to ask for forfeiture to the state in the event that other properties are discovered in future belonging to him.

"South-East is the most neglected zone in the country since the advent of the present democracy 16 years ago. The roads in existence since then were not maintained or improved so also other public infrastructures are in total decay. Successive Federal and states governments in the zone contributed in the conspiracy to destroy the zone.

"The state governors looted the treasury of the states with feeble opposition from the few activists in the zone. A former governor of Enugu state forfeited over 170 houses to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other properties.

"All these were looted from the public treasury and these are funds that could have been used to take care of the citizens. When most citizens cannot afford shelter, a leader was able to build over 170 houses" Omotayo stated.

The CRRAN boss equally recalled that in the last days of the immediate past administration of Sullivan Chime in Enugu State, the Governor battled the State Assembly to a standstill over his demand that the House should approve a N10 billion Naira loan to a government which had few days to expire.
