The United States is updating its contingency plans for a potential war with Russia for the first time since the collapse of the Soviet Union, according to
US officials. The US Defense Department is re-evaluating its Cold War era military plans following increasing tensions between Washington and Moscow over the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria, the Foreign Policy magazine reported Friday, citing current and former Pentagon officials. “Given the security environment, given the actions of Russia, it has become apparent that we need to make sure to update the plans that we have in response to any potential aggression against any NATO allies,” says one senior Pentagon official familiar with the updated plans. “Russia’s invasion of eastern Ukraine made the US dust off its contingency plans,” says Michèle Flournoy, a former undersecretary of defense for policy and co- founder of the Center for a New American Security. “They were pretty out of date.” This would signal a major departure from post-Cold War US military policy. The policy shift came after Russia’s reunification with Crimea last year and the conflict in Eastern Ukraine. The Pentagon is also reviewing several hybrid warfare strategies, and even a nuclear attack. “As you look at published Russian doctrine, I do believe people are thinking about use of tactical nuclear weapons in a way that hadn’t been thought about for many years,” says the senior official who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The military strategy has two dimensions. One focuses on what the US would do as part of NATO if Russia attacks one of NATO’s member countries. The other plan considers US action outside the NATO alliance. The conflicts in Syria and Ukraine have significantly increased tensions between Russia and the US. Washington accuses Moscow of orchestrating an “illegitimate referendum to annex Crimea" and fueling unrest in eastern Ukraine. Moscow, however, has repeatedly denied having a role in the Ukraine conflict, despite accusations by Kiev and its Western backers.

Martin suggested that the Middle Eastern countries need to look to Russia as “a significant world geo-political player” in order to “find real solutions and peace in the Middle East.” “The West and the United States have been the root causes of all of the problems with their propping up of the Zionist regime in Tel Aviv,” he added. “The only real, serious fighting that is being done against ISIL terrorism and the subsequent crimes against humanity… is Russia and Iran and Syria,” Martin further said. “And we see that in some form, those three nations are working together.” Asked to comment on recent remarks by Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, who criticized President Barack Obama’s policy in Syria, Martin said she is “running away from her policy and Barack Obama’s policy” which gave rise to Daesh (ISIL). Clinton was the secretary of state during Obama’s first term and his primary opponent before that in the 2008 presidential election. Israel has expressed concern that Russia’s deployment of air and ground forces in Syria may lead to accidental trade of fire as Tel Aviv sporadically targets fighters of the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah inside Syria. Hezbollah has been helping Damascus in its fight against the militants. During the meeting, Putin tried to soothe Israeli concerns on Russia’s deployment of troops, saying Moscow will act responsibly in its decisions in the Middle East. “… all of Russia’s actions in the region will always be responsible,” Russia’s Tass news agency quoted Putin as saying. The Russian leader also dismissed Netanyahu’s allegations of a potential Syrian offensive against Israeli forces in the occupied Golan Heights, calling them unfounded. CIA officials requested and received an
immediate meeting with their SVR
counterparts in Moscow this past Wednesday
(16 September) where they pledged to assist Russia in defeating ISIL/ISIS and stated that
their reason for doing so was in order to
prevent an all-out war from occurring in this
region between NATO and Russian forces. This SVR report notes that they were told by
their CIA counterparts that all of these
American intelligence agents were
“appalled” by the Obama regimes refusal
to accept from Russia a massive list of
known/suspected Islamic terrorists on the grounds that it was not “politically viable in
the present atmosphere” to accept help
from President Putin in protecting both
America and Europe from these terrorists
who are now entering these countries by the
tens-of-thousands disguised as refugees. Further angering the CIA, this report
continues, was the stunning revelation last
week of an “intelligence revolt” in the
American military when 50 of these spies
publically stated that their honest assessment
of the ISIS war were instead being turned into happy talk by the Obama regime to keep
