Students Hold Deputy Governor Hostage Protesting Prolonged Strike In Osun by nnamdibig(m): 7:09pm On Sep 21, 2015
There was a mild drama in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Monday, when students of tertiary institutions owned by the state government held the deputy governor, Mrs Titi Laoye Tomori, hostage during a protest over prolonged strike by their lecturers.
The students, under the aegis of National Association of Osun State Students (NAOSS), had converged on the popular Olaiya junction around 10.00 a.m., causing traffic gridlock on the popular Gbongan-Ibadan expressway.
The protesters included students from Osun State Polytechnic, Iree; Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke; Colleges of Education in Ila and Ilesa. They trekked from Olaiya to the state secretariat at Abeere, where they blocked the main gate, preventing the entry and exit of vehicles.
They sang solidarity and anti-government songs to condemn what they termed indifference of the administration to the plight of their lecturers.
However, at around 12:55 p.m., the Deputy Governor was driven in a convoy of vehicles to the secretariat, but the students prevented her from gaining entry into the secretariat.
In an apparent move to halt Laoye-Tomori's movement, some of the students lay on the ground in front of her car, while others lay at the back, thus inhibiting her movement.
Similarly, attempt made by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Lawerence Oyeniran, to appeal to the students failed as he was booed.
