Senate President Bukola Saraki is under fire over the 13-count corruption charge posed by the Code of Conduct Tribunal. Every single day the situation is changing. Amid the controversy surrounding the ongoing trial, Naij.com recalls the timeline of events proceeding the today’s trial. How it began It all started last week after the politician was accused of having provided false assets declaration and of public funds looting during his governorship term . Response of the Senate president Saraki on September 16 denied the charge , having described it as “frivolous”. Moreover, he pledged full cooperation when the case reaches the tribunal. Court halts the trial The CCB move was halted by Abuja High Court after an application that had been filed and moved by Saraki’s lawyer Mahmud Magaji (SAN). Attempted arrest The CCB ordered IGP Solomon Aranse to arrest Saraki. However, it turned out later that the arrest order was not received yet. Tribunal chairman Danladi Umar issued a bench warrant on Saraki for failing to appear before the tribunal in a trial against him. Saraki in his reaction to the development explained he was ready to submit himself to due process but also had the right to resort to the same judiciary for protection in case of rights infringement. However, the Senate head insisted he remained a loyal member of the ruling party . Finally President Muhammadu Buhari spoke up The country leader practically distanced himself from the proceedings saying the presidency is not authorized to interfere in the legal process . Saraki snubs the trial again, but later pledges to appear in court On September 21 the Senate president failed to appear at the court proceedings, again . The situation, however, occurred because of the legal advice Saraki received from his counsel that it is not necessary for him to appear before the tribunal at this stage. No chance to stop the arrest Saraki did not manage to stop the CCT legal move to enable his arrest as the Appeal Court dismissed his application .
