I hope Nigerians will one day wake up, they even claimed that countries that brought religion to africa do not understand it as much as Africans do.
it a pity, for how long will we continue live in fear of hell fire ?

I sincerely think that as Nigerians, we need to embrace science and technology, study it and understand it as much as we studied and understand religion and faith. It will do us a great deal!

I am devoted Christian, but the way we allow religion and faith kill us is amazing! You board a vehicle from a motor park, with driver, and instead of trying to check and ask questions if the driver is qualified, licensed, fit, not under alcoholic influence we’ll rather prefer to donate monies to fake preachers who board to tell you how people die on road accidents because they did not donate monies to pastors.

They preach and tell you how to cover the driver, vehicle, tyres and steering with the blood of Jesus, and we all shout a loud ‘Amen’.

Why do we derive joy in looking for witches and wizards, when we fail to do the primary things to guaranty our safety? For how long can the blood of Jesus allow decrepit vehicles convey us from Abuja toLagos?

I will prefer we have technical experts visit motor parks, instead of fake pastors, and sensitise passengers on how to spot inexperienced, unlicensed or drunk drivers, and what to check out for before boarding any commercial vehicle. They should advice technically on the conditions of vehicles before going on the roads. The bad side is that Nigerians are not good in voluntary assignments that do not pay and road users will not be willing to give tips to such volunteers. They prefer to give to men of God who threaten them with hell fire and dangers.
This is why I prefer to fly when on long trips, because the road transport industry and system in Nigeria is suicide mission, and has little or no functional regulatory body and so anyone can bring any vehicle and anyone as driver. Admittedly, our airways are not as safe, however, the industry is run by highly specialised professionals who have so much at stake in the event of any accident.

Created in February 1988, the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, which functions generally relates to making the highway safe for motorists and other road users, has failed and its purpose almost defeated.

A similar body, the Vehicle Inspection Office Driver and Vehicle Licensing Administration (VIO-DVLA) which primary aim is to standardise drivers’ license certification process and maintain a database of certified drivers and vehicles for the enforcement of road traffic laws in Nigeria, has also not lived up to expectations.

As the rate of road accidents increase in Nigeria on daily basis, it becomes urgent that the government looks into existing regulatory bodies or create new ones and mandate them to work closely with road transport companies.

I appeal we separate religion/faith from reality (science and technology) because if we have good vehicles, good and fit drivers and new tyres, the rate of our road accidents on our roads will reduce, while a large amount of the blood of Jesus would be saved for better things.

We all know speed is a major factor in many accidents. However, speeding causes not all accidents and not all accidents are preventable. Yet there are steps you can take to help prevent accidents. These include driving slowly when the weather is bad.
Replace worn tyres and brakes as needed. Keep windshield washer fluid full and change out windshield wipers on a regular basis.
Not only do seatbelts keep you safe in an accident, it will help avoid accidents as well. Seatbelts will hold you in place during an aggressive manouvre. Back off and do not tailgate or allow others to tailgate you.

Do not assume the other vehicles will stop just because the light is red.Do not drive behind an 18-wheeler on the highway. A blown tyre can cause an accident.
Do not rely on your mirrors when making a lane change. All vehicles have “blind spots” in which your mirrors cannot see. Do not ride in the blind spots of other vehicles.
Always keep your windshield wipers going in the rain. Defrost your windshield to keep it from fogging up. Turn on your headlights to help others to see you–this is also the law in some states.

It is always best to have a “designated driver”. Never drive after you have had alcoholic beverages. Even one beer can alter your ability to drive safely.
Always use your signal, even if you think no one is there. When changing lanes on the freeway, do not signal as an afterthought or during the lane change. Signal at least a couple of seconds in advance so others know what you are going to do before you do it.

This post is very educating and insightful.Unfortunately from the responses it shows that 95% of Nigerians that use public transport will rather rely on the blood of Jesus than actually seek empirical ways to have safe travels. We are hypocrites in Nigeria and our religious beliefs goes hand in hand with evil. The OP has provided an intervention idea which can be adopted by FRSC.

Why bring d religious angle to Ur write up just to paint Christianity bad?

Have u entered bus going to sokoto? Driven by Muslim driver? Do u know they chant " bismillahi... " whatever n stops by to pray irrespective of d faith of other passengers? Does that make them not to drive dangerously? Why did u single out Christianity to mock?

Nairaland always bring anti Christian threads especially on Sundays and allow atheists and muslims write rubbish about Christian faith, while Islam thread requires u to swear and get initiated before u can comment.

This injustice must stop.

Write Ur road safety tips without getting it muddled up in religious animosity.

Any thing that touches on religion or faith, we nor dey gree grin

That we pray and cover ourselves with the blood of Jesus before leaving our house for a journey does not mean we shouldn't check the road worthiness of the vehicle and the driver.

I think it has less to do with our spirituality than our lack of safety consciousness as a people. grin

PS:
It would have made more sense if the OP didn't paint the article red with the blood of Jesus, or at least balanced it with the Muslim aspect; now the message of the post would be lost in religious bigoted comments

I'm currently driving in Nigeria and I am just amazed about how Nigerian passengers sit smuggly behind certifiable insane Okada riders as they weave and dodge between other vehicles and up to and including heavily overweight semi trailers. I actually had one fat sow caution me as I was cut off by her definitely mad Okada rider that do I want to kill someone? This overweight behemoth (still don't know what those motorcycle frames are made off that they don't crack under the wight of 4 grown Men) did not care to understand that her life was being put in danger.

Same thing goes to those small deathtrap buses (Hiaces), I watched one on Lagos Ibadan expressway just continuously drive recklessly and both front passengers were just sitting there in a trance and not engaging the driver. Me I would have faked needing to urinate and disembarked right away.

Omg! One of the most intelligent and well written post I have read on NL this year.

I have always discussed this same issues with close friends and associates that 90% of accidents on Nigeria roads are man made.

The witches and wizards never told us to:
Drink and drive
Overspeed beyond the recommended limit
Not to change our worn out tyres and brake pads
Overload our vehicles
Not to use seat belts
Lack of patience and wrong over taking. ..and the list goes on!

If only we can do the right things and stop blaming some witches and wizards. Our safety on these roads is our primary responsibility!
the worst comment i have read on this platform.....have you not heard where a good fixed car and a coolheaded driver involved in an accident? there are some unnatural things that happen....inviting God in whatever we are doing is not bad, devil is roaming about seeking for who to devour, how do one escape bn devoured, its by prayer and dedication.....or i guess you don't open your bible.

the op is correct in the proper check of vehicles and drivers but on the part of God, he is wrong.

i once heard a girl confessed that her evil mission is to visit a park, pretends she's travelling then go round the vehicles 3 times stylishly not to be noticed and leave the park, and the vehicle she succeed in must have accident on the road EXCEPT there's a prayer before the vehicle moves or prayer inside the vehicle....some of the people praying for passengers are real while some are just there for the money (offering)

we need sensitizations both as passengers and drivers. I am of the opinion that 95% of accidents can be avoided when we do a routine check everyday before we leave our houses, maintain an acceptable speed limit and know the rules guiding road usage to mention but a few.

Knowledge is power.

A friend was ones driving a 50 something seater bus, then the back tire exploded. Few of us would leave the wheel and go for our safest option which is 'shouting blood of Jesus' because the back of the vehicle started swinging from left to right but what did he do??
On a different day and situation, his procedure might not work but he simply took he legs off the pedals, put the car on neutral, held on tightly to the wheels and stirred the car till it was moving slow enough to be braked.

Twasnt rocket science or an act performed by angel gabriel himself, twas just someone that understood driving a little.

Once saw a guy too that survived an accident, he said his car failed brake, and the first thing he did was to turn of the ignition. Dont know if thats right, but the little i know, if you switch of your car, the steering locks and thats you reducing your chances of survival.

People need to educate us so the blood of Jesus could rest a bit. LOL

cc the government, PMB, FRSC, anyone

OP, while I agree with you that checks should be carried out by the concerned authorities, I disagree with you on your blanket condemnation of prayers for safety while on the road. Moreso, I have not come across any one of that says if you donate money to him, road accidents will be averted.

Just like Prov 3:5 says you should not lean on your own understanding, do the needful and ask God to take over. Remember the Titanic.

We need God in everything we do. We Christians believe in the blood of Jesus and it works wonders. No matter how perfect d system and technology could be, we still need to apply our faith. I have faith in the blood of Jesus and it's working for me. I agree with doing things right but crowning all effort with the blood of Jesus is best for us that believe in it. Perfect system and technology have failed many times. Only Jesus doesn't fail. He is who I believe.

So you mean those people that die everyday didn't pray before they embarked on the bus/vehicle they died in? Inviting God into your everyday life and activities isn't a bad idea at all but that must have been after you have made necessary checks and sadly that also isn't a guaranty that you wont have an accident because the roads are very bad. Just like the OP said, The government need to look into various aspects of the transportation system and make adequate corrections to ensure safe and enjoyable trip to commuters.

Post of the year as far as I am concerned. We are too fanatical and thus cloud out objectivity, but then I usually ask"Does it mean that those involved in ghastly accidents never prayed or their faith was not enough to save them? The time we begin to understand that Jesus' shed blood is not a magic liquid but basically for our sins to forgiven when we sincerely repent and have the prospect of salvation even at death, then we will be able to take the necessary precautions each time we embark on journey's and not sorely depend on miracles all the time.
