Engineering: engineering is a field of knowledge that combines the fields of science and mathematics to solve real life problems that improve the world around us. Engineering is the application of scientific, social, economic and practical knowledge in order to invent, design, build, maintain, research, and improve structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes. Engineering has a very broad scope with the boundaries between the very many fields being overlapping. The term engineering was derived from the Latin “ingenium” meaning cleverness and “ingeniare” meaning “to contrive or to devise” (that means the next time you see an engineer or engineering student, you should know that they are clever people). The American engineer’s council for professional development has defined engineering as: “the creative application of scientific principles to design or develop structures, machines, apparatus, or manufacturing process, or works utilizing them singly or in combination; or to constructor operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under the specific operating conditions; all as respects an intended function, economics of operation or safety to life and property.” A person that practices engineering is called an engineer. Engineering is a very broad discipline which is often broken down into several sub-disciplines. These disciplines are concerned with differing areas of engineering work. Engineering is characterized as having four main branches under which other sub-disciplines find their place:

Chemical engineering
Civil engineering
Electrical engineering
Mechanical engineering
Electronics Engineering

Engineers apply mathematics and sciences such as physics and chemistry (especially physics) to find suitable solutions to problems or to make improvements to the status quo. Engineers are required to have knowledge of relevant sciences for their design projects. As a result, they keep on learning new materials so as to be abreast in evolving fields and to remain relevant throughout their career. The unique task of the engineer is to identify, understand and interpret the constraints on a design in order to produce a successful result.

However, most of the time, most engineering projects are carried out as a team. For example, in the construction of an electricity dam, the civil engineer who specializes in structural design would calculate the size of the dam and the essential structure characteristics as well as the needed materials to ensure stability, the mechanical engineer designs the motors and analyses the thermodynamic processes involved in the generation of power and also the electrical engineer designs the electric motors needed for energy conversion and transmission into useful purposes. The engineering team is very much encompassing. Finally, engineers are problem solvers and most of the time the challenge is finding the easiest way of solving a problem.
