In general civil engineering is concerned with the outlook of human created fixed projects within the greater world. Civil engineers work hand in hand with surveyors to design grading, pavement for water supply, drainage, dams and other fixed structures for human utility. Civil engineers apply the principles of geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, construction engineering, environmental engineering, transportation engineering to residential, commercial, industrial and public works projects of all sizes bearing in mind the load capacities and service characteristics of their products. Civil engineers are expected to have fundamental knowledge in the field of material science as materials and their service characteristics are the core of their occupation.

Among the important subdivisions of the field are construction engineering, irrigation engineering, transportation engineering, soils and foundation engineering, geodetic engineering, hydraulic engineering, and coastal and ocean engineering structural engineering, forensic engineering etc.
