The hunt for alien life broke new ground today after water was discovered on Mars .

NASA announced the amazing find at a press conference earlier - sending UFO enthusiasts into a frenzy.

The existence of H20 in a liquid form underneath the red planet's surface could lead to the discovery of Martian life forms - albeit probably in microscopic form.

A statement from the space agency said: "Water is essential to life as we know it.



"The presence of liquid water on Mars today has astrobiological, geologic and hydrologic implications and may affect future human exploration."

NASA 's Mars Curiosity Rover made the ground breaking discovery during its long mission to explore the planet.

And while water may be the most important find yet, it's certainly not the first interesting thing to be spotted on the planet:



This enormous planetary pothole has been photographed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and could show evidence of a supervolcano on Mars .
