Flood Alert : Governor’s Aide Visit Delta Communities, Warns Residents by histemple: 8:36pm On Sep 28, 2015
The Senior Special Assistant to Delta State Governor on Youth and Community Development, Hon. Egbo Victor Okemena (JP), has warned communities resident in flood-prone areas such as low lands and river banks in the State, to take proactive steps and gradually relocate to safer parts of the State, to avert the dangers of being enveloped by the impending flood.

He made this call in Aboh, the headquarters of Ndokwa East Local Government Area, during a scheduled enlightenment tour of communities in the most vulnerable flood-prone areas in the State.

This followed the earlier warnings by the DG of NEMA, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Sidi and the Delta State Deputy Governor, Barrister Kingsley Otuaro, to Nigerians and Deltans respectively, following information from the Cameroonian authorities on plans to release excess water from the Lagdo Dam between now and November 2015.

Hon. Egbo, while addressing Community and Youth Leaders, said he became extremely worried owing to the recent flooding that washed away parts of Kaduna state, where no fewer than 12 persons were feared dead and hundreds of houses submerged, thereby rendering thousands of persons homeless and distraught.

It will be recalled that the regrettable 2012 flood disaster swept away the entire Ndokwa East LGA, leaving many people dead and properties worth millions of naira destroyed, even as the State Government hurriedly rescued survivors to various flood camps in the State.

Following the disastrous effects of the massive 2012 flood, both Countries had reached agreement in 2013 that, Cameroon would give early warning to enable Nigeria put adequate measures in place to prevent excessive destruction of lives and properties.

Hon Egbo, who had visited the Okpai, Afor, Obikwele, Uchi, Beneku, Ashaka and Aboh communities for sensitization, reminded the teeming enthusiastic crowd that the obvious rising water levels at the River Niger and it's adjoining Creeks, only resonated the earlier warnings by Cameroon and urged the residents not to be flippant about these signs but act fast.

The forecast by the relevant Government agencies looks gloomy, but the effect of the impending flood can be contained by concerted efforts from everyone", he concluded.
