As Nigeria marks her 55th anniversary as a nation today, October 1, so many Nigerians will observe the holiday declared by the federal government and the day will go on like every other day.

This is because majority of Nigeria’s citizens are no longer passionate about the country due to many factors that is entirely not their fault.

Naij.com lists five reasons why most of them have since lost the interest in participating in the country’s annual independence celebrations.

Read below:

1. Division of the political landscape: The constant political tension in the land is one factor that has led to so many Nigerians not showing interest in the independence celebrations. Groups such as the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) canvassing for the break-up of the country have contributed to the polarisation of the country along regional lines. There are also groups like MASSOB across the nation whose past time seem to be fanning the embers of disunity.

2. Economic Factors: Because of the economic challenges that most Nigerians face on a daily basis, most of them are usually not bothered by celebrations like the independence or any other one at that. People just go about their duties and focus on their ends meet without giving a hoot about what is going on around them.

3. Lack of Patriotism: Most Nigerians are not patriotic. This is not really a deliberate act by the citizens, it is because many do not want to identify with the country, due to the ills that Nigeria has been tagged with by the international community and also because of some unscrupulous and criminal elements in the country, who have succeeded in creating a bad image for the nation. Many Nigerians are holders of more advanced countries passport, just to escape being subjected to ridicule by immigration officials all around the world. Such citizens do not concern themselves with important national days like the independence day.

4. Low Awareness: The government at all levels are not doing enough to educate and orientate Nigerians, especially the younger ones on the significance of the independence day celebration. There is little or no awareness programme created and funded by the government to ensure that the legacy of Nigeria’s independence is well documented and preserved for the upcoming generations.

5. Security Challenges: The security challenges in Nigeria have been a major issue that Nigerians have had to live with. The North East especially has been subjected to terrorists attacks especially on major holidays. Before now, people in these places troop to recreational centres to celebrate the independence, but nowadays, people are forced to stay indoors in order not to be caught unawares when criminal elements strike due to the relaxed security during holidays.
