Actually the tenure process is not that well defined and varies from school to school. In fact, in most top schools it is highly political, and minority professors often struggle with the process.
Hopefully with all the shouting on diversity, we hope to see more black professors at the top level, which will in turn increase opportunities for blacks at the student and faculty level.
It is my considered opinion that students in top schools are not made of innate abilities, but of the little opportunities that are afforded them as they grow up.

One thing I am yet to investigate is the effect of a failed tenure on the career of a professor, particularly one of minority origins, given that the opportunities are usually limited in the first place.

ehn, na lie o, in the top schools, you have to be insanely good to get a position there because you are competing with other proffessors to win a Nobel Prize. Can you imagine being in the economics department of Columbia university where you have to compete with several Nobel Winners like Paul Krugman, Joseph Stiglitz and the others. You would have to better step your game up boy.

Firstly, the discussion is on the tenure process.
You are not competing for a Nobel prize, or competing with Nobel prize winners, as Nobel prize laureates (like Paul Krugman, Joseph Stiglitz) are usually tenured professors and often, than not, full professors.
There is a required academic profile to get an appointment in a top school, but you need more than your intellectual prowess to secure tenure.

By all means let's celebrate Nigerian/Nigerian-related achievements everywhere, but by no means look down on those who are holding the forth back home. This is not to excuse any bad behavior and there are plenty of bad teaching in Nigerian Universities (as all over the world). However, many of those "Nigerian Professors" were at one time more brilliant than even this young professor. Many of them came straight out of Nigeria and topped their classes in the foremost American/British Universities, then returned home - full of patriotism to support national development - only to have their dreams dashed on the alta of corruption, inefficiency and plain incompetency of those who claim to be leaders of the nation. Given the time, 1975,  that this professor's parents left Nigeria, they were probably among those took advantage of those golden years, but decided not to return. In retrospect they probably made the right decision for themselves and their family. Others returned and have managed to succeed, but the majority's high level of expertise have rotted away.
