Russia Is Using Old, Dumb Bombs, Making Syria Air War Even More Brutal by Nobody: 8:47am On Oct 03, 2015
On September 30, Russian warplanes launched
their first air raids in Syria, striking eight
targets around Homs, north of Damascus. In a
second day of strikes on October 1, Moscow’s
planes hit another five targets, according to the
Russian Defense Ministry.
The Kremlin insists it’s hitting militants from
the so-called Islamic State. But the locations of
the aerial strikes imply otherwise—that Russia’s
bombing civilians and U.S.-backed rebels
instead. Chillingly, video and photographs from
Russia’s new air war seem to indicate that the
attacks are inaccurate and indiscriminate.
Instead of dropping precision-guided munitions
like the U.S.-led coalition does, the Russians
are joining the Syrian air force in deploying
unguided “dumb” bombs, apparently including
deadly cluster munitions, which are much more
likely to kill bystanders.
In short, Russia’s making Syria’s brutal air war
even worse.
The Kremlin deployed 34 fighter-bombers and
a spy plane to Latakia, a regime stronghold in
western Syria, beginning around September 21.
The warplanes were part of a contingent of
Russian troops, vehicles, and missiles Moscow
hopes will preserve Syrian President Bashar al-
Assad’s tattered regime, four years into Syria’s
bloody civil war.
“There is no other way to settle the Syrian
conflict other than by strengthening the
existing legitimate government agencies,
support them in their fight against terrorism,”
Russian President Vladimir Putin said
September 28.
But it was quickly evident that Russian air
strikes weren’t bombing many, or any,
terrorists, at least not using the U.S.
government’s definition of “terrorist.”
The air raids on September 30 and October 1
hit areas outside of ISIS’s control—and instead
struck towns occupied by U.S.-backed secular
rebels who also threaten Assad’s rule. “I want
to be careful about confirming information, but
it does appear that [Russian attacks] were in
areas where there probably were not ISIL
forces,” U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter
told reporters, using another acronym for ISIS.
The Syrian National Council, a political group
allied with anti-Assad rebels, claimed the
Russian air strikes killed 36 civilians. The U.K.-
based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights
said 28 people died, including women and
children.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov denied
the accusation. “We are not supporting anyone
against their own people,” he said. “We fight
terrorism.”
But the Kremlin’s methods in Syria are
worryingly similar to those of Assad’s own
regime, which has relentlessly and
indiscriminately bombed cities and towns
under rebel control, killing thousands of
civilians. The regime’s warplanes lack sensors
for accurate targeting and the kind of guided
munitions that the U.S. military famously sent
streaking through buildings’ air vents during the
1991 Gulf War.
Instead, Syrian jets fire highly inaccurate
rockets, lob unguided bombs, and even scatter
cluster munitions that can pepper areas the
size of football fields with lethal explosives.
Worse, when the regime began running out of
purpose-made aerial weapons, it began
improvising bombs from metal barrels and
explosive filler, and rolling them out of the
cabins of high-flying helicopters.
These so-called barrel bombs kill more Syrian
civilians than ISIS does, according to Kenneth
Roth, executive director of New York-based
Human Rights Watch. “The apparent aim is to
kill and terrorize civilians (and destroy civilian
structures) so as to drive civilians from
opposition-held areas and to send a warning of
the misery that attends anyone whose
neighborhood is taken by opposition groups,”
Roth wrote in August.
Russia possesses plenty of air-to-ground
weapons and so does not need to resort to
barrel bombs. But its own inaccurate attacks
could have the same terrible effect as the
Assad regime’s DIY munitions. A video of the
initial Russian attacks that the Kremlin released
on September 30 appears to depict the small,
scattered blasts of a cluster bomb.
More than 100 countries have signed on to an
agreement banning the use of cluster bombs.
The United States did not sign the agreement
but nevertheless began phasing out operational
use of cluster munitions in 2003. Russia is one
of the few countries to continue producing and
deploying cluster bombs on a wide scale.
To be clear, Russian pilots couldn’t be more
accurate in their attacks even if they wanted to.
While the United States and its allies have
invested billions of dollars in precision
munitions and the aerial sensors to guide
them, Russia has continued to rely on mostly
unguided weapons for air-to-ground attacks.
The Center for Analysis of Strategies and
Tactics, a Moscow think tank, has criticized the
Russian government for its “strange” and
“unacceptable” failure to develop satellite-
guided bombs and new long-range precision
air-to-ground missiles, plus the targeting
systems to direct them. “Russian air force
bombers and tactical fighters rely on air-to-
surface targeting technologies that are 30 years
old,” Alexander Mladenov, a Russian aviation
expert, pointed out in Combat Aircraft
magazine.
In borrowing methods—and targets—from the
Syrian regime’s own bloody air war, Russia is
likely to kill more civilians, create more
refugees, and make an already terrible conflict
even worse. “The result of this kind of action
will inevitably, simply be to inflame the civil
war.

I agree with your assertion. I'm sure Russia has got a bit of aging dumb bombs that it would like to get rid of and bombing these insurgents presents the perfect opportunity. For highly sensitive targets though, I think they will opt for the smart bombs to avoid high civilian casualties; "collateral damage" as my western "friends" would say. tongue

Rubbish article. The moment i saw the site name, i then understood the message and the pathetic wailings.cheesy The Yankees alluding that Russia doesn't have smart bombs or precision guided missiles? What a joke. The Su24 fencer as old as it is, has been upgraded and provisioned to carry prescision guided bombs, let alone the rest like Su34 and 35s. The fact that Russia already has such weapons is evidenced by the successful elimination of the rebellious militant leader Dudayev who was killed with precision weapons far back in the mid- 1990s.
On April 21, 1996 Russian secret services intercepted a signal from Dudayev's satellite phone in a village located 30 kilometers from Grozny. Two Su-25 with self-guided missiles rose in the air. Dudayev was killed by a rocket while talking on the phone. His widow Alla Dudayeva then said that she was next to her husband at the time of his death. One rocket hit exactly at him, while others destroyed his car parked a few hundred meters away. According to the media, it was the first combat use of the Russian high-precision weapons.
There are other examples as well. For instance, during the memorable "Operation Peace Enforcement" in South Ossetia in August of 2008, the Russian Air Force, according to media reports, used guided precision weapons to destroy an aircraft plant and an airport south of Tbilisi. The target was hit with no collateral damage.
Lately, high-precision weapons are being developed in Russia with an eye to the space positioning. In other words, a local war anywhere in the world could be coordinated from the outskirts of Russia. Military satellites conduct optical, infrared and radiation reconnaissance and calculate the coordinates of enemy targets. Then the air force at a distance of 100-300 kilometers launches a missile or bomb using a satellite navigation system.
Have you ever wondered why Pentagon is always screaming to high heavens whenever the Russians put something in space?cheesy

Unfortunately, in the 1980s and 1990s, for obvious reasons, the Russians did not conduct any special active development in the field of high-precision weapons. Unlike their NATO countries that have been investing billions of dollars in satellite guidance systems for missiles and bombs. But that does not imply that the Russians doesn't have or do not make use of such weapons. The groundwork of the Soviet defense industry was sufficient for present day Russia to catch up within a short period of time. A striking example of this is the notorious missile complex "Iskander." It was so successful that experts consider it the best in the world and a very promising high-precision weapon. It was also due in part to this newest weapon the plans of the U.S. to deploy missile defense in Europe have been revised for the time being.grin
Oh, when the Russian General refering to the propose US missile shield to Poland said, " we will take care of that with ONE missile ", what do you think he was refering to?grin Dumb bombs?gringringrin

Let the CIA control dailybeast site answer that.

The fact that Russia may have use unguided bombs even in Syria, does not in any way implies they only have unguided bombs like the US is putting it. If such is ever used, it only underline the strategy in realizing the goal upon the mark at that particular time. It is as simple as that.cheesy

The Americans are wailing because from the look of things, that First airstrikes may have completely destroy the CIA command centre that was hidden among civilian population.grin

Why am i even here at the first place?cheesy America have been wailing even before these air strikes began. They can only wail while Russia does the strikesgringringrin

And come to think of it: with all the guided bombs and missiles used by that hypocritical United States of Lies in Iraq, civilian casualties was still far more than actual military targets. Infact, they still have to bribe the Iraqis army not to fight back.gringrincheesy

Well, cheesy as far as ISIS is concern, it doesn't matter if the Bombs are dumb or smart; all are good for those sons of perditiongrin

But in case the yankees and its enslaved media goons wants to confirm for themselves, let them board an F16 or F18, confront or threaten any Russia plane and see if the Bomb is smart or not.gringringringrin

The Russians have been using both smart and dumb munitions in their campaign against terrorists in Syria.

The video image from the first strike(s) the Russians released was from a drone.

There are multiple videos of Russians PGM strikes in Syria.

Over 1,500 coalition airstrikes in the little town of kobani leaves a lot to be desired of the effectiveness of western airstrikes.

This is the perfect time to see if the US has any weapons of practical effect left in its arsenal. It has financial trickery, propaganda and theater. It has no military capability that can compete with Russia, apparently. We wait to see what it will do - only because the US is naked at the moment, and whatever it does will show the boundaries of its capability. A false flag seems the most likely possibility, but doing it under Russian satellite and radar means it could well backfire and turn into the smoking gun that cannot be denied, and that finally implicates the US as a war criminal.

So this is the time for the naked emperor to produce some pants - if he can.

Stop trying to be smart by half. -Missy89 claims the Russians have been using dumb bombs on their Fencers and Frog-Foots from day 1.

- when provided evidence to the contrary, she claims only the SU-30sm have smart munitions.

- When evidence provided completely obliterates her attempt at misinformation, she then claims she doesn't care about the missions at all.

Evidence provided shows that,

1, The SU-24 "Fencer" carries smart munitions "HK-25 Laser guided missiles".

2, The SU-30sm only carry out air cover missions and none has carried out air raids.

3, Only the Frog-foot and Fencer are carrying out bombing raids.

4, Evidence ( Photo and Video) show the Russians are using both guided and unguided munitions for their raids.

How many times do i need to quote where i rightly said that both guided and unguided bombs are used?

The First video and pictures of prepped planes were CLEARLY carrying unguided bombs and the timeline clearly matched when the article was written on the 2nd. Videos and Pictures of guided bombs started appearing after this article. THAT IS THE FACT.

You should go and do your research.

The first round of videos released by Russia MOD showed planes clearly missing their targets which further supports what the article was all about and your "photo evidence" was taken after the article being discussed was written. That is not misinformation.

This is the first video of airstrikes (day 1). Is that precision bombing? Article was written on the same day. And here is another Video of Frogfoots deploying more unguided bombs. Pictures of smart bombs started appearing AFTER which makes the article very factual indeed.

But when you are a truthseeker and one who loves humanity like me, you will then understand how disgusting it is to see some diabolically motivated few persons trying to shape and control the world you lived in just because they want their own thought and ways to be the sole model for the entire globe. The same free world God created for us all. Point of fact! Anybody clapping for a terrorist and a muderer like the US, is himself a terrorist and a murderer. And if standing up to such sheer terror, deception and hypocrisy, meant being tagged an extremist, then i will gladly accept such and rejoice thereafter within the freedom of my conscious soul.cheesy But if anyone wants to come for me for being a " righteous extremist ," then such must be adequately prepared because i would be sitting in the lofty height of my PAK T50 FA, co-ordinating with my homie, Cyprus000, in his Alienic Armata T14 located in the Sambisa forest of kaleningrad, cheesy where we take no prisoner of zombiefication. grin

And what is factual about the article? Are every bomb use in conflicts always the guided types?;-/ Is the US not using such bombs even as at present? Now, that is the problem with the article! Bias to the core. Abi na precision guided Obomber them take bomb Kunduz Hospital and Yemeni wedding party, huh? ;-/

Besides, i never said Russia was only using precision guided bombs, nor did i deny their use of so called " Dumb Bombs ". What i was trying to say is that the US and Its Allies were painting it in such a way that makes it look as if Russia is the only nation using such bombs; or is using only bombs from the 1960s era. This is a battle of disinformation and reinformation, hence, we can't afford to leave any stone unturn. You were correct when yolu said Russia was using both dumb and smart Bombs, but the west position emphasized and insinuated only the use of Dumb bombs by the Russians, which is just in furthereance of the current misinformation and smearing been perpetuated by the hegemon enslaved media covens.
If it isn't the US, no one can use dumb bombs. Nonesense! Why are they not covering the US bombing of Hospital in Kundus- Afghanistan, or the Yemenis wedding party bombing by Saudis jets under the tutorlage of American instructors? Just do a Google search on these crimes against humanity and see if most of these big boys media bodies reported or followed up with such stories. Prescision guided bombs my foot.

The US-led West is making noise out of similar issues they have been involved in both past and present. Is just a case of the pot calling the kettle black. And besides, no one expect them to be happy, given the fact that a man that steps in to a fight within days is already yielding results, the same fight the US claim to be fighting for over a year now with nothing to show for it. So it is expected that they will come out with guns of character assassination blazing at any given opportunity.

Pathetic losers!

Henry120:

The Russians have been using both smart and dumb munitions in their campaign against terrorists in Syria.

The video image from the first strike(s) the Russians released was from a drone.

There are multiple videos of Russians PGM strikes in Syria.

Over 1,500 coalition airstrikes in the little town of kobani leaves a lot to be desired of the effectiveness of western airstrikes.

Russian SU-24 jet with KH-25 laser-guided missiles ready to
be used in Syria.

"Photo evidence clearly shows a Fencer with a KH-25"...... You were saying?
She was saying the same thing: both dumb and smart bombs.

And your own clear like DVD!

And the Americans destroyed the hospital in Kunduz, because they were using smart bombs.
