Never in the history of Rivers state has any person or group been so threatened by the prospects of a fellow Rivers man serving at the federal executive council.
The expected appointment of former Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi into the cabinet of the President Muhammadu Buhari -led government appears to be giving sleepless night to members of the Peoples Democratic Party, especially those of its Rivers extraction. We gather that members of the Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI) and the PDP in Rivers state have concluded plans to carry out a mass protest against the inclusion of the name of Rt Hon Amaechi into the ministerial list recently sent by President Buhari to the senate for screening. The GDI, which is described by some persons as the militant wing of the PDP in Rivers state is a pet organisation of Governor Wike which was very instrumental to his emergence as the flag bearer of the PDP in the 2015 elections.
Sources reveal that tens of millions of Naira have been earmarked to help mobilize members of the GDI from the 23 local government areas of Rivers state for onward movement to Abuja where they will be expected to create nuisance by violently demonstrating at strategic sports under the guise of concerned Rivers people between Monday and Tuesday. The plan, we hear is been coordinated by Samuel Wanosike and Bright Amaewhule. Bright Amaewhule who is the current caretaker chairman of Obio-Akpor is the President of GDI, while Samuel Wanosike who also doubles as the Assistant Secretary of the PDP in Rivers state is the Secretary of GDI.
If the protest does hold, it would not be the first time Governor Nyesom would attempt to drag the image of his former boss into disrepute, either through direct vituperations or sponsored press statements and documentaries released in the name of allies and cronies. The recent media attack from one Livingstone Weche, a known ally of Governor Wike served in the media committee of his campaign team left no one in doubt of the source of funding for the expensive media war he commandeered under a phony name, Integrity Group.
Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi had earlier described the multi-million naira campaign of calumny against him as being political. Dr Dakuku Adol Peterside, the governorship candidate of the APC in Rivers state has dragged Governor Wike, the PDP and INEC before the Elections Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abuja over alleged irregularities in the conduct of the 2015 governorship elections which produced Wike as governor. It is believed that if the tribunal were to annul the elections and a rerun were scheduled, a federal appointment to Amaechi may help in the mobilisation of voters for the APC.
