Gov’s loyalists plot against Amaechi’s confirmation
It’s mere fabrication… We won’t respond to speculations –Wike

By Adetutu Folasade-Koyi

THE bitter feud between governor of Rivers State, Mr. Nyesom Wike and his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi may shift to the Senate as from tomorrow.

The fight will be over how to stop Amaechi’s screening and confirmation as minister representing Rivers State in President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet.

Last Wednesday, the president forwarded the first batch of ministerial nominees to Senate President, Bukola Saraki, who is expected to unveil the list to Senators in plenary tomorrow.

Senate Majority Leader Ali Ndume told newsmen at the weekend that the screening and confirmation of ministerial nominees will start on Wednesday.

Reports, however, indicated at the weekend that Wike and his loyalists in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have lined up against Amaechi even before he steps foot into the chamber.

Amaechi’s kinsmen in Rivers State chapter of the APC had also vowed to resist any move to scuttle his clearance by the Senate.

A source in the PDP caucus indicated at the weekend how some party stalwarts met with PDP Senators to “pay back Amaechi in his own coin” for “fighting his own brother and siding with an outsider” and also, “defecting from the party to the APC.”

The plot may also effect the ministerial nominee from Ekiti State, it was gathered. “We are already mobilising our members in Rivers and Ekiti states to reject the nominees appointed by the President.”

Former Ekiti State governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi is the state nominee.

On the heels of the plot, the APC in Rivers has also threatened “to march on Abuja because of Amaechi. We have information about the plot against Amaechi. We are ready. We will mobilise and let the PDP know that we have supporters to match their strength.”

When contacted, APC chairman in the state, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya admitted he heard the rumours and has told members to be prepared.

“The APC in Rivers has borne with equanimity all the numerous attacks by the PDP and its leadership against our leader and former governor Chibuike Amaechi.

“It is sad, indeed, as the former governor has done nothing to deserve such evil behaviour. We have decided as a party that we will no longer keep silent. We will match the PDP action for action and word for word.”

Wike, however, dismissed the reports as “mere fabrication and speculation.”

The governor’s media aide, Simeon Nwakudu told Daily Sun it was unfortunate that some people could just “sit somewhere and concoct fabrications.

“In the case of APC, it’s a political party that’s been roundly rejected by the people of Rivers.

“The party is peopled by men who lack probity, by extremely corrupt persons as exemplified by Amaechi, who shunned the Commission of Enquiry set up by the state government.”

There was also reports that some states would soon forward petitions to the Senate concerning their ministerial nominees.

In Kaduna State, a group, Centrum Initiative for Development and Fundamental Human Rights Initiative has appealed to the three Senators from the state to intervene, as there were doubts about the ethnicity of the state’s ministerial nominee.

The nominee, Amina Mohammed, was said to be from Gombe State.

There are also plans to stop Mr. Adebayo Shittu, the ministerial nominee from Oyo State.

Whether someone is able to engage in corrupt practices or not depends on who they are working for.
The key isn't whether the appointee is a thief or not, it is whether the appointer allows
him or her to steal - like Gej did.

But come to think of it, I would have expected the president to have given Amechi a post which do not require the approval of the senate.
If the Senate fails to approve Amechi for a ministerial position, then the president have systematically pushed Amechi away from his cabinet since his inputs may no longer needed.
Even without Gov. Wike's objection to Amechi been a minister, I believe most PDP senators will never want to approve him. Then, it will be a test of how much in numbes APC senators from the north and south loves Amechi.
A responsible government needs not the services of a garrulous minister but a twice-thinking one.

"To stumble twice against the same stone is a proverbial disgrace" - Cicero
Wike is embarking on a mission that is practically impossible, an exercise in futility.
His case is a tale of an unserious housewife who always rant without meaningful contribution.

Why not give up now before the name appears?

You want Amaechi to be accepted as being corrupt without any proper trial but people like you defend Saraki who is generally known to have had corruption cases with EFCC, ICPC and CCB.

This senate won't reject Amechi's name, they can only ask him questions for record purpose and then pass a vote of confidence.

.wike and Rivers PDP,are ranting ants, they can't do Amaechi anything. Amaechi will scale through senate screening, the PDP senators from Rivers can only have their say, while the majority senators have their way.Despite petitions, and protest from Lagos APC senators, obanikoro still scaled through senate screening.

But Wike and PDP claimed they were not interested in whether Ameachi becomes a Minister or not. Wike/PDP violent disruption of APC campaign live on tv is still fresh in our minds.

As for me any failure of the Senate to clear Amaechi based on any frivolous reasons should be placed squarely in Saraki's box of tricks. This is an APC-dominated Assembly. Ameachi is a loyal APC member and if he had been, acceptably, vetted by all relevant security agents only Saraki's show of tricks can delay his clearance not some cruel oppositions from his State.

The same goes for Fayemi and others. All delays or non-clearance should be blamed on Saraki.

APC government of confusion.

What exactly is the rationale behind the needless delay by Buhari in forming a cabinet when most of the nominees are proving to be the key actors during Buhari's electioneering campaign?

The drama of petitions and counter-petitions and general disquiet that would follow this ministerial issue would take another considerable amount of time.

Meanwhile, the business of.effective governance and the delivery of the dividends of democracy, the overarching reason the APC was given the mandate, would again take the back seat.
