Three days to the re-run governorship election in Ekiti state, armed thugs, this morning, unleashed terror on members of the Action Congress (AC) going for a rally at Oye Ekiti.

Reports reaching P.M.NEWS this morning revealed that there were shootings by armed thugs suspected to be members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as AC members moved enmasse for a rally at Oye Ekiti, the local government of its governorship candidate in the re-run election, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

P.M.NEWS gathered that the thugs blocked the road and prevented AC supporters from moving to the rally ground. Some AC members were assaulted while their vehicles were damaged. Some of the band boys of a popular fuji musician, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM1), who was scheduled to play at the rally today, were allegedly arrested by the police as they tried to set up their musical instruments for the rally.

Incidentally, KWAM1’s mother hails from Ilupeju Ekiti in Oye Local Government Area of the state. Attempts by AC members to report the arrest to the state commissioner of police proved abortive, as his aides said he was out of town. AC leaders, including Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, governor Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos state and his Edo state counterpart, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; Chief Bisi Akande, AC National Chairman and other chieftains of the party are expected at the rally.

The PDP has also scheduled tomorrow for its final rally to mobilise support for its candidate, Engineer Segun Oni. Expected to attend the rally in the state are president Umaru Yar’Adua, Vice President Jonathan Goodluck and other chieftains of the party. President Yar’Adua and other party leaders had visited the state on 3 April, to campaign for Oni.

Meanwhile, the Action Congress governorship candidate in Ekiti state, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has assured the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members who defected to AC on Tuesday, in Ikole-Ekiti, that they would be treated fairly in their new party. Mr. John Filani led at least 65 of the PDP members who defected to the AC. He spoke at a rally in the town, which marked the last leg of his campaign for this weekend’s election in 63 wards of the state.

He urged voters not to entertain fear to cast their votes, saying adequate security would be provided for a hitch-free exercise. Fayemi said voter’s card holders would be allowed to vote irrespective of the anomalies that might have been observed on the voter’s list displayed by INEC ahead of the re-run. At Ijesa-Isu-Ekiti, Fayemi assured on his commitment to the provision of sound healthcare delivery system if voted into power, saying he would ensure that Ekiti residents are in good health at all times. He spoke as residents were waiting to be attended to by his medical crew in his free health project for the people. At a rally attended by thousands of party supporters, Fayemi assured the people that he would lead a government that is determined to raise their standards of living if voted into power. As at the time of filing in this report, P.M.NEWS gathered that four women and nine men have been macheted at Ifaki.
