Steps to take to prevent problems on tomato leaves Plant healthy, disease-free plants. Water at the base of plants. Overhead water spreads disease easily. Water in the morning or midday to minimize the amount of time leaves are wet. Monitor plants daily to check for pests. Avoid working on plants when leaves are wet. Remove and destroy affected plants at the end of the season. Solarize soil at the end of the season to destroy soil-borne fungi and bacteria. Rotate crops each year. |

Different Kinds of Tomato Blight
and How to Tell Them Apart
At least two common tomato problems are referred to as
tomato blight and another one is often thrown into the same
mix:
Early blight
Late blight
Septoria leaf spot
They’re each caused by a different fungus. You can tell
these three problems apart by what they look like, what
parts of the tomato they affect, and when their symptoms
appear. But the good news is this: all three can be treated
and controlled similarly with biofungicides or fungicides and
by practicing good preventative care. Cause fungus: 1. Alternaria solani fungus 2. Phytophthora infestans fungus: 3. Septoria lycopersici Characteristics 1. Dark, concentric spots ¼ - ½” on lower leaves and stems Spots on fruit near stems Lower leaves yellow and drop 2. Blue-gray spots on leaves which turn brown Dropped leaves Irregular brown, greasy spots on fruit 3. White mold rings on spots Small black or brown spots on the lower leaves Lower leaves yellow and drop Parts affected 1. leaves, stem, fruit 2. leaves, stem, fruit 3. leaves, stem Timing 1. early- to mid-season in wet weather 2. mid- to late-season in wet weather 3. early- to mid-season in wet weather 1 Like 1 Share |

How to Identify, Treat, and Prevent
Tomato Diseases
Tomatoes are fun to grow, but they are susceptible to many
infections. Tomato diseases are caused by bacteria, fungi,
and viruses. They spread through the soil, water supply, air,
infected tools, animals, and gardeners.
Fortunately most are usually
not fatal. The key is to
identify a disease early so you
can treat it before it overtakes
the plant and then manage
symptoms successfully. Take
these preemptive steps to
handling diseases.
Anticipate. Find out
about tomato
diseases common
to your area. Talk
with local nursery
staff and ask for
information from representatives at your region’s extension
service. If tomatoes in your area are prone to a certain
disease, plant resistant varieties.
Monitor. Check your plants each day for symptoms.
Identify. Study symptoms and treat diseases quickly so
your plants can recover and flourish. |

Entrepreneur Youth Multipurpose Cooperative How to treat tomato diseases 1. Note symptoms. Diagnose your tomato plant’s problem by comparing its symptoms with descriptions of specific diseases. 2. Treat according to recommendation for the specific disease. Ways to prevent tomato diseases Take steps to keep diseases away or reduce their severity. 1. Rotate crops Many bacteria, fungi, and viruses can survive years in the soil. Reduce incidence when you plant tomatoes no more than once every three years in the same spot. Avoid planting other Solanaceous crops (members of the same family as tomatoes, including potato, pepper, and eggplant) in the same area, too – they are susceptible to many of the same diseases as tomatoes. 2. Improve soil Before planting, add a good amount of compost or organic matter to the home garden to improve the soil. Extra nutrients and aeration grow stronger plants which can resist infection. 3. Plant disease-resistant tomato varieties Many hybrid tomato varieties are bred specifically to resist particular diseases. Plant disease-resistant varieties to have the healthiest crop possible. Tomato disease-resistant codes are listed on seed or seedling packets in capital letters. They include: V = Verticillium Wilt F = Fusarium Wilt N = Nematodes A = Alternaria T = Tobacco Mosaic Virus St = Stemphylium (Gray Leaf Spot) TSWV = Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus 3. Don’t under-water or over-water Keep tomatoes on a regular watering schedule to help them stay healthy and strong. Avoid over-watering which can lead to consistently wet conditions – the perfect environment for many bacteria, fungi, and viruses to multiply. 4. Destroy infected plants If you allow infected plants to over-winter in the garden or if you throw them on the compost pile, there’s a good chance disease will spread to other plants or multiply in the soil. Throw away or burn infected plants. |

jethro2: 15days. Cocopeat tomato nursery. They av refused to grow more than the first two leaves |
Re: Are There Problem On Your Tomato Leaves? by jethro2: 3:20pm On Oct 17, 2015 |
MayorSchwags:Do you process/treat the cocopeat before using it. Please don't ask me because I don't really know much about cocopeat. though I have a colleagues that use it on his farm. I make use of normal soil + poultry waste + sawdust. 15 days is quite premature. some nursery transplanting starts by two weeks. Something must have affected the seedlings either from your cocopeat or the method by which you handle them. Your seed source too also need to be considered. I was at a shop some other time and they select kept some seeds separate because the germination rate is low. Not all seed sellers are that sincere. |
