An Amusement Park Called Nigeria

Nigerians amuse me to no end; sure, not all Nigerians, but quite an overwhelming number of them. After keeping Nigerians waiting endlessly for months, President Muhammadu Buhari (who has not hidden the fact that if he has his way, he would prefer to do without Ministers) finally nominated people with well-known antecedents in private and public service as Ministers. Now, as part of the process, these nominees are facing Senate confirmation.

The Senate appearance consists of light 'grilling' by Senators and then they ‘bow and go’, yet some people are creating new geniuses from the performance of a very mediocre list of nominees, because of the way they blew foneh or answered the typical soft questions thrown at them by Senators who in professional wrestling parlance are actually jobbing for these nominees - Senators whose bank accounts are bursting at the seams from the illicit proceeds of this process!

Now, would anyone remember whatever they are saying during this confirmation hearing when they step into their allotted ministries and continue with the destruction of the nation that has been the hallmark of their public service so far? Do we need a confirmation hearing to see that at least more than ninety-five percent of those nominated are persons who have evidently failed serially in public service already?
The fact that we cannot seem to make a case against this recycling of old failures says more about us as a people than it says about these failed politicians. The Change project is being derailed under the noses of the same Nigerians who noisily voted to see its implementation and they are the same ones serenading the killers of that project in the name of that Change. Four years may be a short time in the life of a nation, but it isn’t in the life of a normal human being who is supposed to be the beneficiary of government policy.

My take in this whole ministerial elephant-promise to mouse-delivery abracadabra is simple. Buhari’s only legitimate route in pursuit of the Change project was to nominate young, vibrant, visionary, even if publicly untested Nigerians as Ministers. Many of them were sympathetic to his presidential ambition and helped in no small way to bring about his election. In fact, he himself was appointed Federal Commissioner of Petroleum and Natural Resources (Minister) at the age of 33, so you wouldn’t expect him to have a problem with appointing young people.
His biggest push for the Change project would have been for the list of his ministerial nominees to be opened on the floor of the Senate and for Nigerians to first struggle to recognise most of the names of the young people he nominated. That would have been the most authentic body language! Of course, we’ll get the usual army of misguided traditionalists shouting about experience, but of what value has been this experience to Nigeria over the years? Does having decades of experience stealing public money equate to experience necessary to remain in public service in 2015 Nigeria?

The truth is the appointment of new, fresh-faced young people as Ministers would in a country of over 70 percent youth population immediately make the whole nation identify with the government’s mission. This would have been the most eloquent statement about change, about the fact that it’s no longer business as usual. If indeed we believe the future belongs to these young Nigerians, nothing exemplifies that belief better than giving them the opportunity to build that country of their dream from the highest levels of government.

But when a recycled 72-year old president overwhelmingly nominates people at the departure lounge of life as Ministers, what he and them are telling us is that they want to take Nigeria with them to the grave. I mean, what does Buhari want to tell the mass of young people that drove his Change campaign when the relatively young ones amongst his nominees are themselves arrowheads of corruption? To me, this is another opportunity missed….

Your definition of intelligent contribution must be the joke of eternity. Use your intelligent contribution to contribute to making life better if that's too broad for you, then try to make your community and your family better. Contribute to their lives if you are intelligent.
As an intelligent person, you will not depend on the government rather u will pray for the success of the government instead of making comments and contributions that incite people as if you will be able to fight a war or u are bullet proof. Mr intelligent contribution!
