The Denim jeans seem to be every man’s favourite piece of pants so it pays to read up on how to care for yours. This guide gives washing instructions and tips from industry experts on managing the favourite piece of clothing in your wardrobe.

First things first, before buying a pair of denim jeans you need to know the right fit is for you as there are several types which may not appeal to you.

Here are tips on selecting the right pair of jeans.

The Straight leg
This is the traditional type of jeans and is usually a good fit for taller and more athletic people. It’s great for those with narrower waist than shoulders. However, if you are straight-up-and-down-tall with skinny legs, then go for “slim straight” fits as opposed to traditional “slim” or “tailored” fits.

Slim leg
This fits great for man of all shapes and sizes. It also goes best for shorter guys as the lower waistband appear to elongate your torso.

Skinny fit
The Skinny fit comes with stretch-in the material it’s great for men with skinny torsos. You need to understand the difference between this and the Skinny and the Skin tight jeans while picking as the former allows more room to move and is relatively more comfortable.

After picking up a pair that fits well on you, find out if has been “sanforized” (a term inspired by the man who made the process, Sanford Lockwood Cluett), which means preshrink, else they will shrink approximately 2 inches in length and around the waist after the first wash.

If they are unsanforized you need to soak them before putting them on. Fill a bath tub with warm water and place the denim jeans laid flat but turned inside-out in the water adding some weight on them for approximately for 120 minutes.
Once you take the jeans out of the water dry them upside down to reduce shrinkage.

Here are some tips on cleaning your denim jeans

It’s advisable to wear Denim jeans without washing them too frequently for about 5-6 weeks. That said they shouldn’t be worn daily, else you nullify the rule as the environment, weather or terrain could be a factor for increased wash, not to mention your eating habits.
