The Federal Government yesterday formally launched a new national Postal Code otherwise known as ZIP Code. It also decided to put up a committee and appoint consultants who will fashion out modalities for a new national addressing system in the country.

Speaking in Lagos at a 2-day workshop on National Addressing System in Nigeria with the theme: “Addressing as a Strategic Infrastructure for National Development”, Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili , stated that the move is designed to put Nigeria in line with other countries of the world and also ensure that its addressing system is standardised. She also directed the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) to liven up its official website to adequately represent the nation’s postal system.

“Now Nigeria has the Zip Code and today is also the day that we have all collectively come together to start working on our addressing system; in this way we are going to ensure that names are not replicated in the cities and we don’t use names we are not supposed to use in addressing streets and facilities in the country.

"What we are doing is part of other interventions that we plan in repositioning NIPOST. NIPOST will come up again to be one of the vibrant institutions in this country because we all know that the British telecoms is one of the highest employers of labour in the UK. We want NIPOST to also become one of the employers of labour in Nigeria and believe that we are on course,” she said.

The minister also said that the launch of the post code, which is part of the numerous interventions at repositioning Nigeria and NIPOST, will further ‘address our inadequate and confusing Nigerian addressing system. She advised Nigerians to approach their nearest post office to collect their respective Zip Codes.

“You can go to the nearest post office where you live or your office to find out your postal code so that when next you travel, you will not be telling people when they need your address that Nigeria does not have postal code,” Akunyili said.

She said the Federal Government will work together with states and local governments to actualise the project as it involves having a holistic map of all residence and offices in Nigeria, noting that it is a huge job and capital intensive as well.

Although Nigeria had a similar postal code system in place between 2000 and 2001, which are described by the Minister as ‘skeletal’, the new platform offers full Zip Code for the country.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed , said that the concept of re-branding the country required positive re-orientation of values of the people and entails a rediscovery of ‘our national identity.’

When fully put in place, the proposed addressing system will, among other things, enhance the performance of security operatives, facilitate national planning activities, help NIPOST and other related agencies to deliver effective and efficient services, bring the necessary reform to street naming, enhance tax collection and help businesses to realise their full potential.
