Recently, the Brass LNG project in Brass, Bayelsa State received nationwide attention. Jackson Gaius Obaseki is the current chairman of the budding company - Jackson, a tested technocrat in oil and gas business and former GMD of the NNPC stated in a recent interview that the Brass plant will help convert hitherto flared gas to economic and profitable natural gas liquids to be exported for forex.

One of the major plus for this project is its proximity to the raw materials needed to run the plant - natural gas. The plant site is at the heart of the Niger Delta. Nigeria's gas reserves is said to be the third largest in the world, with almost all the gas volumes - trillions of cubic feet, located in the Niger Delta. And even with more than ten years of LNG production from Bonny, fact is that we're yet to tap anything from the volumes of gas we have down there.

While the Olokola LNG project seems to have faded into oblivion - and nobody talks about the project anymore, the Brass LNG project - site and all is receiving greater attention from the funding partners. No one will spend millions of dollar fabricating long range natural gas lines from the Niger Delta to somewhere thousands of kilometres away - to ''expand'' the economy of an enclave. This is the case with Olokola.

I posit that more LNG plants be located near the source of gas. The Olokola LNG should be put on hold, at best cancelled and instead, locate anotherĀ  LNG plant in Warri. And even if there exist any in there, more should be located still in the Delta. I see youth restiveness and crude oil theft becoming a thing of the past with more avenues for employment getting created in the Niger Delta States.

Ono - your position is far too sensible and straight forward to be accepted. What we need to do is bring some federal character into this matter. You see, the North and the East also need gas plants. After all, why should these people in the Delta monopolise oil and gas. What do these Delta people expect the rest of the country to do?

Too sensible?

Well, I agree plants can later on be located in other places. No wahala. But I suggest planners should exhaust all possible options that is cost effective and reasonable before doing so. The Olokola project in my opinion was politically motivated.

Even if the market for the gas is in Lagos or some other densely populated area, a very strong justification must be raised for government to site a project in a location considered not economically viable. And in these days of scarce fund allocation, political justifications aren't considered viable options anymore.
